Hall of Fame
Quincy College men’s soccer team was the first team inducted into the Hall of Fame. That season, the Hawks were the first of 11 teams to win the NAIA national championship and remains the only undefeated national championship team in Quincy soccer history. Quincy finished 13-0-0 that season, outscoring its opponents 56-11 and posting five straight shutouts at midseason. The Hawks capped off their season with a 6-1 victory over Trenton State in the national championship game.
The 1966 team was coached by the late Roger Francour and he was assisted by the late Frank Longo. Players on the team included Russ Achelpohl, Class of 1970; Mike Atkins, Class of 1969; Bob Bastiaans, Class of 1970; Bill Bregach, Class of 1968; Tom Browner, Class of 1968; Edmundo Camacho, Class of 1972; Frank Haggerty, Class of 1968; Joe Havrilko, Class of 1967; Jim Huneke, Class of 1970; Ken Husted, Class of 1967; Bob Kennedy, Class of 1970; Gary Kovarik, Class of 1968; Tim Morrell, Class of 1969; Jerry Murphy, Class of 1970; Pat Rothery, Class of 1969; Fred Schmalz, Class of 1966; Carl Schwarzen, Class of 1971; Rich Schwarzen, Class of 1969; Marty Settle, Class of 1969; Tim Sheehan, Class of 1971; Jim Thomson, Class of 1971; Mike Villa, Class of 1968; Rich Wrobel, Class of 1969; Paul Zientarski, Class of 1969.
The team trainer/manager was George Fischer, Class of 1967. Many of those same players also played for the Hawks’ second national championship team in 1967. Quincy’s win streak eventually reached 20 straight until a 1-0 loss to Saint Louis University midway through the 1967 season.
