Dan McDonnell, Class of 1979, was a key part to the success of the Hawks’ soccer teams in the late 1970s. McDonnell was instrumental to Quincy’s NAIA national championship teams as a freshman, junior and senior. During his sophomore season in 1976, the Hawks placed third in the nation. McDonnell was one of Quincy’s best defensive players ever and at one point, started 88 consecutive games.
McDonnell was a team captain for the 1978 team and was selected as an NAIA all-district and all-area performer as both a junior and senior. Once McDonnell’s playing days were over, he played in the East/West All-Star game and was a 1978 draft pick by the American Soccer League’s Los Angeles Sky Hawks. McDonnell, a graduate of Bishop DuBourg High School in St. Louis, Mo., has had ties to Quincy soccer before and after his playing days. His high school coach, Pat Rothery, Class of 1969, was a part of the 1966 Quincy soccer team which is also being inducted into the Hall of Fame.
