SMYRNA, Tenn. – The Hawks dropped a pair of games on Saturday to close out the Music City Invitational, falling 7–2 to Tiffin University in game one before a 5–1 loss to Ashland University in game two.
Game One – Tiffin 7, Quincy 2
Tiffin jumped out to an early 2–0 lead in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on three walks. Quincy put pressure on the bases in the opening frame with two runners aboard, but was unable to push a run across.
The Dragons broke the game open in the second inning, scoring five runs on three hits, four free passes, and an error to take a 7–0 advantage after two innings.
Freshman
Hailey Platt entered to record the final out of the second and settled in nicely from there. Platt tossed 5.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out two, as Tiffin's offense was held to seven total runs.
Quincy broke through in the fourth inning.
Kenzie Moss drove in a run with an RBI triple, and the Hawks added another when a second defensive error of the inning by the Dragons allowed a run to score.
Both teams were held scoreless over the final three innings, resulting in a 7–2 final. Offense was limited throughout, with just eight total hits in the game, five by Tiffin and three by Quincy. The difference came early, as seven walks issued in the first two innings proved costly. Tiffin's Lexi Key earned the win with a complete-game effort, allowing no earned runs while striking out nine.
Game Two – Ashland 5, Quincy 1
Offense was quiet through the first two innings as both teams worked around early traffic. Quincy struck first in the top of the third inning when
Kaidence Dumas doubled home
Makala Koozer, who led off the frame with a triple.
Hailey Martin got the start in the circle and tossed three scoreless innings before Ashland broke through in the fourth. The Eagles scored three runs on four hits in the inning and added insurance with a solo home run and an RBI double later in the game.
The run in the third proved to be the Hawks' lone tally, as the offense was held in check for the second straight game. Quincy finished with five hits, while Ashland's Olivia Amstutz went the distance, striking out nine.
Quincy returns to action on Friday, February 13, with games at 10:30 AM and 12:30 PM against Nebraska Kearney and Arkansas Tech at the Branson RecPlex in Branson, Missouri.
