NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Quincy University women's wrestling team turned in a strong showing on Sunday at the North Central Open, battling through a highly competitive field of 35 teams. The Hawks finished 17th overall and totaled 20 team points, highlighted by seven podium finishes and a championship performance from
Alexandra Tchekounova, who claimed the title in the 110 B bracket.
Tchekounova delivered a dominant 3-0 run to secure first place, opening her day with a 30-second fall before earning a win by decision and closing with another fall in 1:24. Quincy also saw a runner-up finish from
Abigail Mendoza in the 103 B bracket, where she went 2-1 with a pair of falls to reach the finals. Several Hawks secured top-six placements across the brackets, including
Flo Niyokusenga, who placed sixth at 138 B with three wins by fall or technical superiority, and
Lillian Baynes, who matched that effort with a sixth-place finish at 160 B following a 3-3 performance highlighted by two tech falls and a pin.
The Hawks' depth continued to shine with additional podium finishes in the upper weights.
Madisynn Crawford put together one of the strongest tournaments of the day, earning a third-place finish at 180 B behind an impressive 5-1 record that featured five falls, four of which came in under 90 seconds.
Sophia Sosa added a fourth-place finish at 160 B by securing five wins, all by fall, while
Trinity White capped the weekend with a fifth-place finish at 180 B after collecting four victories, two by fall and two by tech fall.
Quincy received additional wins across the lineup from
Ariella Miloncus at 138 B,
Julia Chambers at 131 A,
Maddy Barton at 138 A, and
Trinity Pendergrass at 110 A, each contributing to the Hawks' strong team effort in one of the largest and most competitive opens of the season.
The Hawks will return to action on January 9th and 10th, traveling to Cedar Falls, Iowa, for a major late-season test at the NWCA Women's National Duals.
