SHAWNEE, Kan. – The Quincy University softball team came up short in both contests Friday at the Mid-America Sports Complex, falling 8-7 to Fort Hays State in a heartbreaker before dropping a 12-5 decision to Winona State later in the day.
Game 1: Fort Hays State 8, Quincy 7
The Hawks struck first in the opening inning when
Kaidence Dumas launched a three-run homer to left-center, scoring
Makala Koozer and
Hailee Irby to give Quincy a 3-0 lead. Fort Hays State answered with two runs in the bottom half, then seized momentum in the third inning with a three-run blast from Alexis Mohr to take a 5-3 advantage.
Quincy chipped away in the fifth as Irby delivered an RBI single to cut the deficit to one, but the Tigers responded again in the bottom of the frame. Mohr struck for her second home run of the game, a two-run shot, and an RBI double extended the lead to 8-4.
The Hawks refused to go away. In the sixth inning, Quincy plated two runs on an RBI groundout and a run-scoring single from Koozer to make it 8-6. In the seventh,
Kenzie Moss blasted a solo home run to center field to bring Quincy within one, but the comeback fell just short.
Dumas finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Koozer, Irby, and Moss each collected two hits. Moss and Dumas both homered, accounting for four of Quincy's seven runs. Fort Hays State totaled 12 hits, led by Mohr's two home runs and five RBIs.
Game 2: Winona State 12, Quincy 5
Winona State broke open a scoreless game with six runs in the third inning and added three more in the fourth to build a 9-0 advantage.
Quincy responded in the fifth when Koozer delivered an RBI single to help cut the deficit to 9-2. The Hawks continued to rally in the sixth as
Andee Brown drove in two runs and a wild pitch plated another to pull Quincy within 9-5.
The Warriors answered in the bottom half with three runs to halt the momentum and secure the 12-5 final.
Koozer led Quincy with two hits and an RBI, while Brown drove in two runs as the Hawks totaled seven hits in the contest.
Quincy will be back in action to wrap up tournament play with two games on Saturday against Northwest Missouri State at 12:20 PM and Augustana at 2:40 PM.
