Romeoville, Ill. - The Quincy University track and field team had an excellent showing at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships this weekend (May 2-3).
Jerron Baker led the way with a second place finish in the triple jump, followed by multiple personal bests and broken records in the three day event. The Quincy men's team finished tied for 11th place with 16 points.
Women's Results
Katie Park was the lone Hawk to qualify for the GLVC Championship and shaved down her 800-meter run by two seconds. Park set the new Quincy record to 2:18.95, dropping her time from 2:23.97 since the beginning of the outdoor season.
Men's Results
On Friday the Hawks bulked up the competition with both short- and long-distance hurdles and the long jump.
Landon Sprous punched a ticket to the 110-meter hurdles finals with a 15.27-second time.
Dominick Ricci missed the finals by a tenth of a second and came across the finish line at 15.75 seconds, a new personal best. In the 400-meter hurdles, Ricci surpassed the record he set in Rolla and ran a 55.46 time, missing the finals by a hair. Sprous rounded out the race at 57.95 seconds. In the finals, Sprous ran a 14.93-second time, his personal best and good for a fifth place finish.
Jack Thompson leaped a 6.89 in his first attempt at the long jump, securing his spot at 9th in a field of 26 athletes. Baker jumped a 6.49-meter leap, and
Jarvis Thompson completed the trio with a 6.35-meter jump.
The Hawks got busy first thing Saturday morning with the triple jump. Baker finished second in a field of 19 with a jump of 14.37 meters. Baker broke the Hawks' triple jump record in his first appearance of the year with a 14-meter jump and ended his freshman campaign on a high note with a silver medal and an all-conference nod.
Jack Thompson finished fifth in the event with a 14.28-meter leap and was followed by
Jarvis Thompson and
Charlie Kallal who jumped 13.47 meters and 13.29 meters respectively.
Ricci rounded out the jumps for the Hawks at the landing area. In the high jump, Ricci hopped over the 1.82 and 1.87-meter bars but had trouble getting over the 1.92-meter bar, ending his day with a 1.87-meter leap.
Ricci was also a part of the 4x100-meter relay that occurred after his time at the high jump. Ricci, Baker,
Jack Thompson, and
Jayden Ruiz ran a 44.22-second relay on the day in a tough group of sprinters. Quincy rounded out the day with the 4x400-meter relay of Ricci, Thompson, Sprous, and
Owen Weinfurtner. The Hawks finished in 3:44.79, good for 11th place.
Quincy made significant strides in the track and field program under
Doug Savage's second year at the helm. The Hawks' young talent will be key in the future of Quincy University track and field.
