QUINCY, Ill. - The Hawks kicked of the home schedule on Saturday (Sep. 21), welcoming the Pomeroys of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College to QU Stadium for week two of MSFL action. Quincy scored the first 13 points of the game but was unable to hold off a second half surge from SMWC as the Pomeroys soured the Hawks home opener with a 28-26 victory.
It was an 80-yard connection from
Deuce Allaway to
Nasir Carson for the first score of the game at the 8:16 mark of the first quarter, giving the Hawks a 7-0 advantage after a successful PAT from
Jensen Laughlin while the QU defensive unit held SMWC off the scoreboard for the first 15 minutes.
Another big connection from Allaway, this time to
Gregory Quince for 59 yards put the Hawks in prime field position for a 12-yard touchdown scamper from
Chance Newton for six. Following a failed PAT, Quincy led 13-0 at the 11:31 mark of the second quarter.
The Pomeroys found the end zone on each of their next three drives, missing a PAT on the first before nailing the second, following the second touchdown, to even the tally at 13-13 at the 3:06 mark of the second.
The Hawks scored again at the 42 second mark on a six-yard tote from
Travon Hegler-Wright as part of a six play, 65-yard drive that only last a minute and 26 seconds to press ahead 20-13.
St. Mary of-the-Woods got the ball back at the QU 48 with 35 seconds remaining in the half and took only one play, a 48-yard touchdown through the air, to tie up the game at 20-20 heading into halftime.
SMWC opened the second half with an 11 play, 62-yard scoring drive, eating up 5:38 off the clock to jump ahead 27-20 before taking advantage of an interception to gain great field position and find the end zone again to press the edge to 34-20 at the 5:05 mark.
Quincy got back into it with a scoring drive of its own late in the third quarter on 5 plays for 70 yards culminating in a 36-yard TD reception for
Nasir Carson to pull within eight at 34-26 following a botched snap on the QU PAT attempt.
It was all SMWC from there as the Pomeroys held the Hawks off the scoreboard for the final 15 minutes while adding a pair of touchdowns to close out a 48-26 victory over Quincy.
Allaway put up 270 yards through the air with a pair of both touchdowns and picks.
CJ Jackson led Quincy on the ground with 73 rushing yards while his counterparts, Newton and Hegler-Wright both found the end zone. Carson led the Hawks receivers with five catches for 144 yards and two scores, including an 80-yard touchdown reception.
