QUINCY, Ill. – Quincy split Sunday's doubleheader against Southwest Baptist at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex, falling 6-3 in game one before bouncing back with a 9-4 victory in game two.
Game 1: Southwest Baptist 6, Quincy 3
The Bearcats struck first in game one when a two-run home run in the second inning gave them an early 2-0 lead. Quincy answered in the bottom of the third when
Haleigh Winter launched a solo home run to right-center, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Southwest Baptist responded again in the fourth with another two-run homer to stretch the lead to 4-1.
The Hawks fought right back in the bottom of the fourth.
Samantha Farrell singled to start the inning before
Kenzie Moss blasted a two-run homer to center field, bringing Quincy back within a run at 4-3. Southwest Baptist added insurance in the fifth after a single and an error led to two runs, making it 6-3. Quincy had chances late, including a runner at third in the fifth and another in scoring position in the seventh, but could not come through with the tying hit.
Moss led the offense in game one, going 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Winter added her solo home run, while Farrell and
Lindsey Fischer each recorded a hit.
Kaidence Dumas went the distance in the circle, allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits across seven innings.
Game 2: Quincy 9, Southwest Baptist 4
Game two was scoreless through the first two innings before Southwest Baptist took advantage of two Quincy errors in the third inning to grab a 2-0 lead. The Hawks got one run back in the bottom half when Moss doubled to center field to score Farrell. Quincy then took its first lead of the day in the fourth inning as
Lindsey Fischer launched a two-run home run to left field, putting the Hawks ahead 3-2.
Haley Martin settled in after the third inning and kept the Bearcats off the board through the middle innings, allowing Quincy's offense to break the game open in the sixth.
Avery Mulvey reached on a fielder's choice before Fischer walked and
Makala Koozer singled home a run. Winter followed with a two-run single to left field and Moss capped the inning with a three-run homer to left-center, giving Quincy an 8-2 lead. Southwest Baptist scored twice in the seventh, but the Hawks had already done enough to secure the split.
Moss had another huge game in the nightcap, finishing 2-for-4 with a double, home run, and four RBIs. Fischer added a two-run homer and finished with two RBIs, while Winter drove in two runs and Farrell scored twice. Koozer recorded a hit, RBI, walk, and stolen base. Martin earned the win after tossing all seven innings, allowing four runs, three earned, while striking out six.
The Hawks begin their road trip, traveling to Springfield, Missouri, to face the Drury University Panthers on April 18–19. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
