Quincy, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Illinois Springfield on Saturday afternoon at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex. The Hawks dropped the opener 6-2 before falling 10-3 in game two.
Game 1: Illinois Springfield 6, Quincy 2
Illinois Springfield struck first in the opening inning, stringing together four hits to score three runs and take an early 3-0 lead. The Prairie Stars continued to apply pressure in the fourth inning, adding two more runs to extend the advantage to 5-0.
Despite the early deficit, freshman
Haley Martin kept the Hawks within reach with another solid outing in the circle. Martin tossed her third complete game of the season, settling in after the first inning and giving Quincy a chance to claw back into the game.
The Hawks broke through in the fifth inning when
Karlie Ingle connected on her first home run in a Hawk uniform, a solo shot to center field that cut the deficit to 5-1. Ingle's blast marked the third home run of her career.
Illinois Springfield responded in the top of the seventh with an insurance run coming off of an RBI single to push the lead to 6-1.
Quincy answered in the bottom of the inning when
Lindsey Fischer launched her first home run of the season and the second of her career, trimming the final margin to 6-2.
Offensively,
Casey Fronheiser stayed hot at the plate, extending her hitting streak to 11 games with another multi-hit performance. It marked her fourth multi-hit game in the last five contests. Quincy totaled eight hits in the opener, but Alexis Carroll kept the Hawks from breaking through consistently, working around traffic and going the distance in the circle to record her fifth complete game of the season.
Game 2: Illinois Springfield 10, Quincy 3
Illinois Springfield jumped out early in game two, scoring two runs in the first inning to take the initial lead. Quincy responded in the bottom of the second when
Kinsey Biggerstaff delivered a two-run home run to center field, her first home run of the season, tying the game at 2-2.
The Prairie Stars quickly regained momentum in the third inning. A solo home run followed by additional pressure on the bases helped Illinois Springfield plate three runs to reclaim the lead at 5-2. UIS continued to build separation in the fourth inning when a two-run double pushed the advantage to 7-2.
Quincy answered in the bottom of the fourth when Fronheiser drove in a run with a groundout, cutting the deficit to 7-3. However, Illinois Springfield added three more runs in the fifth inning to stretch the lead to 10-3, which would hold as the final score.
Biggerstaff led the Hawks offensively in game two, going 2-for-3 with the two-run home run.
Makala Koozer and
Kaidence Dumas also added hits as Quincy finished with six total in the contest. Fronheiser extended her hitting streak to 12 games during the doubleheader, while Koozer pushed her streak to five games.
Quincy will be back in action tomorrow when the Hawks host the No. 11-ranked Greyhounds of the University of Indianapolis for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 PM at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.
