ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Hawks were back in action at the Fred Johnson Duals on Saturday (Jan. 4), picking up 29-13 and 27-19 wins over Westminster and Triton, respectively, while dropping a tight match to the host Vikings 21-18.
Brian Farley got things off on the right foot, picking up a major decision in 125 before
Damien Flores did the same in his 133 match to make it 8-0 Hawks.
Sabian Russell secured a tech fall win in 141 followed up by another major decision at 149, this time for
Zachary Harrington, to make it 17-0.
Westminster pitched a comeback effort over the next four matches, taking 157 by fall, 174 by decision and 184 by major decision while
Jackson Jones delivered a 5-1 decision victory for the Hawks in his 165 match.
Heading into the final two matches with a 20-13 advantage,
Maxim Ryner closed the door on a Westminster comeback with an 11-6 decision in 197 before a
Caleb Groff fall victory in 285 concluded the match 29-13 in favor of Quincy.
Farley picked up another win at 125, this time a decision, to put QU ahead early before an Augustana major decision victory in at 133 put the Vikings ahead 4-3.
Russell and Harrington delivered back-to-back tech fall winners at 141 and 149 to put the Hawks in business up 13-4 until the Vikings swept the next three matches picking up a major decision at 157 and decisions at 165 and 174 to lead once more 14-13.
Callan Ivy gave the Hawks a 17-14 edge heading into the final matches with a 15-7 major decision at 184. Augustana took the final two matches with a major decision in 197 and decision in 285 to claim the match 21-18 after a penalty point was given to QU following the conclusion of the match.
Triton opened the final match with a decision victory in 125 before forfeiting the 133 match. Russell and Harrington delivered two more tech falls at 141 and 149 to put the Hawks ahead 16-3 early on.
Hunter Vernon and Jones picked up 9-5 and 8-5 decision winners in 157 and 165, respectively, to press the advantage to 22-3 before a 174 tech fall victory for Triton in 174 cut the lead to 22-8.
Ivy picked up the final win of the day for the Hawks, taking his 184 match by tech fall. Triton took the 197 match by tech fall and the 285 match by fall to close out the contest 27-19 in favor of Quincy.
