Russell Named QU Toyota Star of the Week After Historic Regional Championship

QUINCY, Ill. – After a historic performance at the NCAA Division II Regional IV Championship, Quincy University men's wrestler Sabian Russell has been named the QU Toyota Star of the Week.

Russell delivered a dominant showing at 149 pounds, becoming the first men's wrestler in program history to capture a regional championship. The No. 1 seed entered the tournament with momentum and backed it up on the mat, finishing the event with a perfect 3-0 record to secure his second consecutive trip to the national stage.

After receiving a first-round bye as the top seed in the bracket, Russell opened his day in the quarterfinals with a commanding 13-5 major decision victory over Colby Schreiner of Newman. Russell continued to roll in the semifinals, overwhelming Mason Knight of Drury University with a 15-0 technical fall in just four minutes to punch his ticket to the championship match.

In the regional final, Russell faced a tough test against No. 12 Gavin Garcia of Indianapolis. Russell controlled the match from start to finish, earning an 8-0 major decision to claim the regional title and cement his place in program history as Quincy's first-ever regional champion.

With the victory, Russell qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championship for the second straight season. The Hawks standout will now set his sights on another milestone as he looks to become the first All-American in program history when he competes on the national stage beginning Friday, March 13 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
