Biography

2024-25 (Sophomore): Russell built on an impressive freshman season with a fantastic sophomore season. He led the team with 31 wins and 19 tech falls, which are both by far single-season highs in the short QU men's wrestling history. Sabian opened up the season with a 2nd-place finish at the Luther Hill Invitational (11/2/24) in the open 141 division. He continued his winning ways by sweeping through the Loosbrock Duals (11/8/24), earning four wins.

At the Service Salute Open (11/9/24), Russell won four consecutive matches, three by tech fall and one by fall, to earn 1st-place in the open 141 division. He went on to earn another four wins and another top-three finish at the Kaufman Brand Bayly UCM Open in the elite 141 division. On the season, Sabian was dominant in dual matches, going 15-1 on the season. 

In postseason play, Russell clinched a spot on the national stage with three victories and a 3rd-place finish at the DII Super Regional IV (3/1/25), becoming the second Hawk men's wrestler to accomplish this feat. At the DII National Championship, Sabian picked up a win by decision in his opening match, then dropped his next two to end his season.

2023-24 (Freshman): In his freshman season, Russell was tied for first on the team in total victories, tied for second with seven wins by fall, and led the team with six wins by tech fall. Sabian made his collegiate debut at the Maryville Open (11/4/23), where he picked up five wins, including four straight, to earn 3rd-place in the amateur 141 division. Russell almost found his way to the national stage as a freshman, winning three matches as the DII Super Regional IV (3/2/24), but fell in the 3rd-place match. On the season, Russell was 8-4 overall in duals.

Personal: Sabian Russell hails from Yuma, Arizona, where he attended Yuma High School. He is the son of Emily and Ben Russell and has two siblings, Katelynn Dodge and Lucian Russell. A standout student-athlete, Sabian was the high school valedictorian and an accomplished wrestler, earning three state placer finishes and three sectional championships. He amassed an impressive 133 career wins and competed at the Arizona Division 3 State Championships. Beyond wrestling, Russell enjoys lifting weights and swimming. He looks up to athletes like Spencer Lee and LeBron James and is a fan of the Los Angeles Lakers and Iowa Wrestling.
