Russell Battles at NCAA Championships for Second Straight Season

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Sabian Russell represented Quincy University men's wrestling on the national stage for the second consecutive season this weekend, competing at 149 pounds at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships inside the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center. Russell finished 1-2 in the bracket, matching his appearance from a year ago as he once again qualified for nationals and competed against some of the top wrestlers in the country.

Entering the tournament as the 13 seed, Russell opened his championship run against fourth-seeded and fourth-ranked Matt Sarbo of Pitt-Johnstown. Sarbo built a large lead early, putting Russell in an 11-0 hole in the opening stages of the match. Russell continued to battle throughout the final two periods, but Sarbo held control and secured a 16-5 major decision.

Russell responded in the consolation bracket with an impressive victory over 12th-seeded Gavin Garcia of Indianapolis. After a scoreless opening period, Russell took control by scoring a pair of escapes before adding a decisive three-point takedown. He finished the match with a 5-0 decision, earning the win at the 5:32 mark and keeping his tournament alive.

In his final bout of the season, Russell squared off with sixth-seeded and sixth-ranked Gabe Onorato of Glenville State in a tightly contested matchup. The two wrestlers traded points throughout the match in a back-and-forth battle that came down to the closing moments. With the score tied late, Onorato escaped with just two seconds remaining to claim a 7-6 decision, ending Russell's tournament run.

Russell's second straight trip to the NCAA Championships caps another strong season for Quincy men's wrestling. The Hawks close the 2025-26 campaign after another successful year and will now turn their attention toward next season as the program continues to grow and build momentum.
