LIBERTY, Mo. – Quincy split Sunday's doubleheader against William Jewell, falling 3-1 in game three before bouncing back with an 18-2 win in the series finale to take three of four games from the Cardinals. The Hawks moved to 29-17 overall and 17-12 in GLVC play.
Game 3: William Jewell 3, Quincy 1
Game three was a pitcher's duel as William Jewell's Charlie Rambo shut down one of the best offenses in the conference. William Jewell grabbed the early lead in the bottom of the first inning. A walk and a single put runners on the corners before an RBI single gave the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage.
Kade Ruffner settled in after that, retiring nine of the next ten hitters and keeping Quincy within striking distance.
The Hawks finally broke through in the fourth inning when
Joe Huffman blasted a solo home run to right field, his sixth of the season, to even the score at 1-1.
Harry Fandre followed with a single, and
Carson Moreno was hit by a pitch to put two more runners aboard, but Quincy could not take the lead.
William Jewell answered in the bottom of the fifth inning. A single and sacrifice bunt put the go-ahead run in scoring position before back-to-back RBI singles gave the Cardinals a 3-1 lead. Quincy was unable to answer over the final two innings as Rambo closed out the complete game victory.
Rambo was dominant, tossing a complete game, the sixth of his career, while allowing just three hits and one run with seven strikeouts. Quincy managed only two walks and struck out seven times.
Fandre recorded two of Quincy's three hits, notching his 14th multi-hit game of the season. Huffman provided the lone run with his solo homer, while
David Broughton made his 150th career start in a Quincy uniform. Ruffner took the loss after allowing three runs on six hits in 4.2 innings, while
Matt Miscik tossed 1.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Game 4: Quincy 18, William Jewell 2 (7 innings)
The Hawks quickly flipped the script in game four, exploding for 18 runs on 15 hits to dominate the Cardinals in the series finale. Quincy wasted no time grabbing the lead as
Jace Figuereo doubled and
Payton Mansfield walked before Huffman launched a three-run home run to center field to make it 3-0. William Jewell answered with two runs in the bottom of the first, but that was all the Cardinals could muster the rest of the way.
Quincy added another run in the third on an RBI single by
Isaiah Fudge before extending the lead in the fourth.
Keegan Farnaus singled, stole second, moved to third on an error, and scored on a Figuereo RBI single to make it 5-2.
The game completely broke open in the sixth inning when the Hawks sent 12 batters to the plate and scored eight runs. Fandre delivered a two-run single, Fudge added a sacrifice fly,
Quinn Schultz knocked in a run with a single, and Farnaus ripped the first triple of his career into right-center to drive in two more. Dahlof capped the inning with an RBI double to push the lead to 13-2. Quincy added five more runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by another RBI from Farnaus and a two-run single by
Ari Fivelson.
Farnaus had one of the best games of his career in the finale, tallying his third multi-hit game, third multi-RBI game, and first career triple in just his sixth career start. Huffman hit his seventh home run of the season and was hit by a pitch twice for the third time this year. Fandre recorded his second straight multi-hit game and 15th of the season, while Dahlof posted his sixth game with at least three hits.
Ben Draeger earned the win in game four after allowing two runs over five innings while tying a season high with six strikeouts.
Jared Rodriguez tossed a scoreless inning for his third straight scoreless appearance, and
