QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team capped off a dominant weekend at QU Stadium on Sunday afternoon, rolling to a 26-5 victory over Truman State to complete the four-game sweep of the Bulldogs. The win marks the seventh straight victory for the Hawks, who erupted for 26 runs on 21 hits in one of their most explosive offensive performances of the season.
The Bulldogs struck first in the opening inning, but Quincy wasted no time responding with a massive bottom half. After
Ben Dahlof and
Jace Figuereo opened the inning with singles,
Isaiah Fudge delivered a two-run single to give the Hawks their first lead of the game.
The rally continued as
David Broughton drove in another run with a base hit, followed by RBI singles from
Byron Blaise and
Keegan Farnaus. Dahlof and Figuereo each added RBI hits later in the inning as Quincy sent 12 batters to the plate, exploding for eight runs on nine hits to take an 8-1 lead after the first inning.
Quincy added another run in the second inning when Blaise drove in Broughton with an RBI fielder's choice, pushing the lead to 9-1.
Truman trimmed the deficit in the third inning with a three-run home run, cutting the score to 9-4, but the Hawks answered immediately in the bottom half. Broughton delivered an RBI double before
Harry Fandre followed with a two-run single, quickly extending Quincy's advantage to 12-4.
Quincy continued to pile on in the middle innings. Fudge ripped an RBI double in the fourth inning to make it 13-4, and the Hawks broke the game wide open in the fifth.
After a pair of walks loaded the bases, Dahlof drew an RBI walk before Figuereo drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Fudge added a sacrifice fly before Broughton launched a three-run home run to left-center, capping a six-run frame and extending the Hawks' lead to 19-5.
The offensive surge continued in the sixth inning as Quincy plated six more runs. Broughton drove in another run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded before Fandre crushed a towering grand slam to right field, blowing the game open at 25-5. Farnaus added an RBI single later in the inning to give the Hawks their final run of the afternoon.
The Hawks' lineup delivered up and down the order. Broughton finished 3-for-3 with a home run and a career-high six RBIs, while Fandre went 4-for-5 with a home run and a career-high six RBIs.
Fudge continued his outstanding stretch at the plate, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs while extending his hitting streak to 13 games. Freshman
Keegan Farnaus recorded his first career three-hit game, finishing 3-for-5 with two RBIs, and has now recorded a hit in all three of his starts this season. Dahlof also had a strong day at the top of the lineup, going 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBIs, while Figuereo added two hits and two RBIs.
Ryan Sell started for the Hawks, allowing four runs over 2.2 innings before
Ben Draeger earned the win with 3.1 innings of relief, allowing just one run while striking out three.
Alex Pickus closed the game with a scoreless seventh inning.
Late in the game,
Sam Birkenmeier made his collegiate debut, entering defensively behind the plate in the seventh inning.
With the win, Quincy improves to 15-5 overall and completes the four-game sweep of Truman State. The Hawks will continue conference play next weekend when they travel to Rolla, Missouri, for a four-game series against Missouri S&T, beginning Friday, March 13 at 2:00 PM.
