Box Score QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's lacrosse team was overpowered by No. 9 Lewis University on Saturday afternoon at QU Stadium, falling 30-8 in conference action. The Flyers used a fast start and a dominant third quarter to pull away, handing the Hawks their fourth consecutive loss.
Lewis came out firing, scoring four goals in the opening four minutes to take an early 4-0 lead. Quincy responded at the 10:21 mark as
Jonah Pappas found the back of the net to get the Hawks on the board.
After Lewis extended the lead to 6-1, Quincy answered with back-to-back goals from
Seve Cordero and
Mason Luoma, trimming the deficit to 6-3. However, the Flyers closed the quarter with two late goals to take an 8-3 advantage after one.
Quincy opened the second quarter with momentum, as Cordero scored twice in a span of under two minutes to bring the Hawks within 8-5. Following a Lewis response, Luoma added his second goal of the day to make it 11-6 midway through the quarter. The Flyers, however, finished the half on a 2-0 run to take a 13-6 lead into the break.
The third quarter proved decisive, as Lewis erupted for 13 goals in the period. The Flyers scored the first seven goals of the quarter in a span of just over eight minutes, pushing the lead to 20-6 and putting the game out of reach. Quincy was held scoreless in the frame as Lewis continued to capitalize on possessions and transition opportunities.
In the fourth quarter, Quincy snapped the drought with a goal from Luoma, followed by a late tally from
Eli Cowan, but Lewis continued to add on to secure the 30-8 final.
Lewis controlled nearly every aspect of the game, outshooting Quincy 60-31 and holding a commanding advantage in faceoffs (31-13), leading to extended possessions throughout the contest.
The Flyers also dominated the ground ball battle 48-26, while Quincy committed 23 turnovers compared to just 15 by Lewis. Quincy was held without a man-up opportunity, finishing 0-for-0 on extra-man chances, while Lewis converted one of its two opportunities. Despite the scoreline, goalkeeper
Austin Vetter recorded 18 saves while facing 48 shots on goal.
Cordero and Luoma led the Hawks offensively with three goals each, accounting for six of Quincy's eight goals. Cowan added a goal and two assists, while Pappas also found the back of the net.
Haakon Steen played a key role as a facilitator, finishing with a team-high four assists. Defensively, Quincy recorded eight caused turnovers, with contributions across the lineup in a high-pressure game against one of the nation's top offenses.
The Hawks will return home to QU Stadium on Saturday, March 28, for a rematch against Rockhurst at 1:00 PM, as they look to bounce back.
