Rockhurst Dominates Possession in 18-4 Win Over Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's lacrosse team dropped its fifth straight game on Saturday afternoon, falling 18-4 to Rockhurst University at QU Stadium. Rockhurst controlled possession from the opening faceoff and dominated nearly every statistical category in the victory.

Rockhurst wasted little time taking control, scoring five unanswered goals in the opening quarter. The Hawks had a few early chances, including a man-up opportunity, but were unable to capitalize as Rockhurst held Quincy scoreless in the first 15 minutes. Two of the Hawks' first-quarter penalties led directly to man-up goals for the visitors.

Quincy found some offensive life early in the second quarter. Seve Cordero scored off an assist from Eli Cowan at the 12:38 mark before Cowan scored his first goal of the game just over a minute later off a feed from Haakon Steen to cut the deficit to 5-2. Rockhurst quickly answered with six straight goals of the half, however, taking an 11-2 lead into the break.

The Hawks scored twice in the third quarter as Cowan and Cordero each added their second goals of the game, but Rockhurst continued to control possession and answered with four goals of its own to take a 15-4 lead into the fourth. Quincy was then held scoreless over the final 15 minutes while Rockhurst added three more goals to secure the 18-4 final.

Rockhurst's dominance began at the faceoff dot, where Carson Bradshaw won 23 of 26 faceoffs and picked up 15 ground balls on his own. The Hawks managed just three faceoff wins all game, their fewest of the season. Rockhurst finished with a commanding 48-17 advantage in ground balls, while Quincy's 17 ground balls marked its fewest total of the year.

The Hawks were also limited offensively, recording just 23 shots and 12 shots on goal. Both marks were among Quincy's lowest totals of the season, with the 23 shots being the second fewest and the 12 shots on goal also one of the team's lowest outputs. Rockhurst outshot Quincy 59-23 and placed 36 shots on goal compared to Quincy's 12.

Defensively, Quincy recorded just two caused turnovers, its fewest total of the season. Goalkeeper Austin Vetter did all he could to keep the Hawks in the game, finishing with 18 saves while facing 36 shots on goal.

Cowan and Cordero each finished with two goals, while Cowan added two assists for a team-high four points. Steen also contributed two assists in the loss. Rockhurst was led by Linus Toward, who finished with 11 points on eight goals and three assists.

The Hawks will be back in action on Saturday, April 4, when they host Maryville University at 3:00 PM at QU Stadium. The contest will also serve as Senior Day, with Quincy honoring its senior class following the game.
