Hawks Fall in Heartbreaking Overtime Battle at Holy Family, 18–17

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Quincy University men's lacrosse team battled back from an early deficit and produced a record-setting offensive performance, but ultimately fell in heartbreaking fashion, dropping an 18–17 overtime decision to the Holy Family Tigers on Monday afternoon at Tiger Field.

Despite dominating the faceoff circle and setting a new Quincy program record with 16 assists in a single game, the Hawks were unable to finish the comeback as Holy Family capitalized on a carry-over man advantage in overtime to secure the win.

Holy Family jumped out to a fast start, scoring the first two goals of the afternoon before the Hawks responded midway through the quarter. Eli Cowan put Quincy on the board at the 6:27 mark off a feed from Ian Kersten, cutting the deficit to 2–1.

However, the Tigers responded with a flurry of offense late in the quarter. Holy Family scored four goals in the final three minutes to take a commanding 6–1 lead into the second quarter.

Holy Family extended its lead early in the second, pushing the margin to 8–1, but Quincy began to chip away behind a surge from its offense. Haakon Steen started the rally with a goal assisted by Cowan, then struck again less than a minute later to cut the deficit to 9–3.

The Hawks continued to build momentum as Mason Louma scored twice in a three-minute span, and goals from Seve Cordero and Cooper Karedes trimmed the lead to 10–7 late in the half.

Holy Family added a man-up goal before the break to carry an 11–7 advantage into halftime.

Quincy came out of the locker room energized and delivered its best quarter of the game. A man-up goal from Cowan, followed by another strike from Steen, quickly cut the deficit to two.

After the Tigers answered, Quincy strung together three key goals, Jameson Essen, Cordero, and Kersten, to tie the game at 12–12. Kersten's tally marked the first goal of his collegiate career, giving the Hawks even more momentum.

Just over a minute later, Louma buried another goal off a Steen assist to give Quincy its first lead of the game at 13–12 heading into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter turned into a back-and-forth battle. Holy Family opened the scoring to tie the game at 13–13, but Quincy responded immediately as Louma scored off an assist from Ricci Ankton, who recorded his first career point on the play.

Moments later, Cowan struck again, this time assisted by Essen, to push the Hawks ahead 15–13. The Tigers refused to go away, scoring twice to tie the contest at 16–16. Louma answered with his sixth goal of the day with just under three minutes remaining, giving Quincy a 17–16 lead.

Holy Family tied the game once again with 1:08 remaining, converting on a man-up opportunity. With 12 seconds left in regulation, Quincy goalkeeper Austin Vetter was assessed a two-minute cross-check to the face penalty, forcing freshman Tate Bouman to make his collegiate debut in the cage heading into overtime.

The Tigers capitalized on the carry-over man advantage early in overtime, scoring the game-winning goal with 2:51 remaining, handing the Hawks the narrow 18–17 defeat.

Quincy finished the afternoon with 50 shots and 27 shots on goal, compared to 47 shots and 31 on goal for Holy Family. The Hawks dominated possession by winning 27 of 38 faceoffs, a key factor in their offensive surge. Both teams finished tied in ground balls with 44 each, while Quincy converted 1-of-2 extra-man opportunities compared to 4-of-5 for Holy Family, including the overtime winner.

Cowan delivered a historic performance for the Hawks, finishing with three goals and five assists for eight points, setting a new Quincy single-game record with five assists while also surpassing 50 career points. Louma led the Hawks in scoring with six goals, tying the Quincy single-game record and becoming the fifth player in program history to reach six goals in a game. The performance also pushed Louma past 50 career goals.

Steen turned in a strong all-around effort with three goals and three assists, while Karedes added one goal and three assists. Cordero scored twice, and Essen added a goal and an assist. Kersten recorded his first collegiate goal and also contributed an assist.

At the faceoff stripe, the Hawks dominated possession. Freshman Jackson Ries won 15 faceoffs and collected 12 ground balls, both season highs. Ricci Ankton added another strong showing at the X with 12 faceoff wins and 12 ground balls, both career-highs, while also recording the first point of his collegiate career with an assist.

In goal, Austin Vetter made 13 saves and surpassed 300 career saves during the contest before the late penalty forced Bouman into action.

The Hawks will look to bounce back quickly as they return to action on Wednesday, March 18, when Quincy travels to face Chestnut Hill with the opening faceoff scheduled for 6:00 PM CT.
