Hawks Drop Final Two Games at Missouri S&T After Nine-Game Winning Streak

ROLLA, Mo. – After opening the series with a doubleheader sweep on Friday, the Quincy University baseball team was unable to maintain its momentum on Saturday, dropping the final two games of the series to Missouri S&T. The Hawks fell 5–1 in game three before a narrow 6–5 loss in the series finale, snapping Quincy's nine-game winning streak and moving the Hawks to 17-7 overall and 6-2 in GLVC play.

Game 3: Missouri S&T 5, Quincy 1

Quincy's offense, which had been one of the hottest in the conference entering the weekend, was largely neutralized in game three by Missouri S&T starter Dylan Bates, who delivered a dominant complete-game performance. Bates limited the Hawks to just four hits and one run while striking out six and not issuing a walk, shutting down a lineup that had been producing runs at a prolific rate during its nine-game winning streak.

Missouri S&T struck first in the opening inning after a leadoff double eventually came around to score on an RBI groundout, giving the Miners an early 1–0 lead. The Hawks were held scoreless through the first three innings before breaking through in the fourth.

Jace Figuereo reached on an error to start the inning, and Joe Huffman was later hit by a pitch to put two runners aboard. Isaiah Fudge delivered Quincy's lone big hit of the game, lining a single through the right side to bring home Figuereo and tie the game at 1–1.

Missouri S&T reclaimed the lead in the fifth inning on a run-scoring fielder's choice and then added three insurance runs in the sixth inning during a sequence where multiple batters were hit by pitches with the bases loaded. That stretch pushed the Miners' lead to 5–1 and ultimately secured the victory.

Despite the loss, Kade Ruffner delivered a solid outing on the mound for Quincy in the start. Ruffner worked five innings, allowing two runs on three hits while issuing three walks and striking out four, before the Miners added insurance off the Hawks' bullpen later in the game.

The Hawks finished with their fewest runs scored all season, were limited to four hits, tying their season low, and did not draw a walk for the first time all year. Despite the loss, Fudge recorded two hits to extend his hitting streak to 16 consecutive games, while Harry Fandre added a hit to extend his hitting streak to eight games.

Game 4: Missouri S&T 6, Quincy 5

Quincy looked poised to bounce back in the series finale, jumping out to an early lead in the first inning. Figuereo singled and later scored when Payton Mansfield delivered an RBI single through the left side. Moments later, David Broughton added another RBI single to give the Hawks a 2–0 advantage.

Missouri S&T responded immediately in the bottom half with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 2–1 before capitalizing on defensive miscues in the second inning. A bunt single and two Quincy errors helped the Miners plate three runs in the inning, with two of those runs coming unearned, as Missouri S&T moved in front 4–2.

Quincy trimmed the deficit in the third inning when Figuereo advanced to third and scored on a sacrifice fly from Mansfield to make it 4–3. Missouri S&T answered again in the fourth with an RBI groundout to extend the lead to 5–3, and another run crossed in the fifth on a wild pitch to push the margin to 6–3.

The Hawks attempted to rally late in the contest. In the sixth inning, Fudge singled and advanced into scoring position before Fandre brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to trim the deficit to 6–4. Quincy threatened again in the ninth inning when Ben Dahlof delivered a triple down the left-field line to score a run and bring the Hawks within 6–5, but Missouri S&T recorded the final out to secure the series finale.

Fudge finished with two hits in the finale to extend his hitting streak to 17 consecutive games. The Hawks totaled seven hits in the contest but were unable to overcome the defensive miscues that helped Missouri S&T build its early lead.

Quincy will now return home for a four-game GLVC series against Missouri-St. Louis at QU Stadium, with the first pitch of game one scheduled for 2:00 PM on Friday, March 20th.
