ELSAH, Ill. – The Quincy University track and field teams turned in a highly successful two-day showing at the Principia Relays, compiling event titles, NCAA qualifying marks, school records, and a long list of personal bests inside the Crafton Athletic Center.
Day 1
On the men's side,
Jack Thompson returned to action in a big way, winning the long jump with a leap of 6.94 meters before adding a personal best in the 60-meter dash (7.32).
Sean Sossou captured the 200-meter title in 22.50 while also clocking a PR of 7.11 in the 60.
In the field events,
Dominick Ricci cleared 1.83 meters to finish fourth in the high jump. The throws group saw continued progress as
Evan Sweeney placed third in the weight throw with a PR toss of 16.79 meters, while
Evan Carroll added a personal best of 13.76 meters.
The hurdles crew impressed in prelims, with
Aneas Smith (8.63) and Ricci (8.71) both advancing to finals with lifetime bests.
Luke Schuette added another PR in the 200 meters (24.72).
For the women,
Suraya Newman continued her strong debut season, finishing eighth in the high jump (1.42m PR) and fifth in the long jump (4.96m).
Madison Roberts qualified for the 60-meter finals with a PR of 7.93, then led a trio of PRs in the 200 alongside Ateezah Chrchwell (27.72) and Kaitlyn McCoy (28.92).
Day 2
Day 2 saw the Hawks elevate their performances even further with multiple titles and records. On the men's side,
Jerron Baker delivered an NCAA provisional mark while winning the triple jump with a leap of 14.58 meters, while Thompson followed with a runner-up finish at 14.30 meters. The 4x400-meter relay team of Ricci,
Kayden Johnston, Smith, and Sossou raced to first place in 3:26.76, converting to 3:23.52.
In the hurdles finals, Smith and Ricci returned to place fourth and fifth with times of 8.72 and 8.77. Quincy's distance group added history as the 4x800 relay squad of
John Damm,
Austin Haskins,
Vinny Olson, and
Joe Warning broke the school record with a time of 8:37.74.
Logan Sutton and
Logan Meyer also recorded mile personal bests in 5:15.64 and 5:21.51, respectively.
The women produced a record-setting day of their own. Newman claimed first place in the triple jump with a school-record mark of 11.21 meters.
Katie Park matched that feat on the track, winning the mile in a program-record time of 5:10.68.
Alexis Fonseca continued her strong meet with a fifth-place mile finish and a personal record of 5:41.40.
Roberts scored points in the 60-meter finals with a fourth-place finish in 8.06. In the distance events, Bri Obermaier placed eighth in the 3,000 meters with a PR of 11:47.29,
Emily Faletti clocked a mile PR of 5:48.20, and
Mia Robnett added a personal best of 13:41.74 in the 3,000.
The Hawks will look to carry that momentum into their next meet when they travel to Bearcat Invite, hosted by Northwest Missouri State University at Hughes Fieldhouse in Maryville on February 6–7.
