LIBERTY, Mo. – The Hawks turned in their lowest scoring output of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling 63–51 to William Jewell at the Mabee Center. An ice-cold second half proved costly as the Hawks dropped their fourth consecutive meeting with the Cardinals.
William Jewell jumped out quickly, building a 12–5 lead over the opening six minutes as the Hawks opened the game 2-of-5 from the field with three early turnovers.
Quincy responded by trimming the deficit to three at 17–14 behind a quick five points from
Tiernan Stynes, but a three-minute scoring drought followed. The Cardinals capitalized with a 7–0 run to push the lead back into double figures with just over six minutes remaining.
The Hawks closed the half strong, finishing on an 18–12 run while shooting 6-of-7 from the field and 5-of-6 at the free-throw line over the final six minutes.
Ethyn Brown scored seven points during the stretch, while
Herb Martin knocked down his first three-pointer of the season as Quincy pulled within four, trailing 36–32 at the break.
Both teams shot around 45 percent in the opening half, but the difference came from beyond the arc. William Jewell connected on seven three-pointers compared to just two for the Hawks, while Quincy stayed within striking distance by going 8-of-12 at the free-throw line, compared to just one make for the Cardinals.
Offense was hard to come by early in the second half, as the two teams played to an even 9–9 stretch over the first eight minutes. During that span, both teams combined to shoot 6-of-22 from the field and 2-of-9 from three, keeping the Hawks within four at 45–41.
Approaching the six-minute mark, neither side could find a consistent rhythm, but William Jewell still held a slim 51–46 advantage. With both teams struggling to score, one timely run proved to be the difference, and the Cardinals delivered that run, going on an 8–3 spurt on 4-of-6 shooting behind one of the GLVC's top players in Justice Sutton, who scored six points during the stretch. The surge pushed the lead back to double digits with just over two minutes remaining.
Quincy was unable to respond offensively down the stretch, scoring just two points over the final three and a half minutes as William Jewell secured its seventh straight win and continued its climb toward the top of the conference standings.
The Hawks struggled shooting the ball, finishing the game at 34.7 percent from the field, 16.7 percent from three, and 63.6 percent at the free-throw line. Quincy controlled the glass with a 42–30 rebounding advantage but committed 18 turnovers, double that of the Cardinals.
William Jewell shot 44.3 percent from the field and knocked down eight three-pointers, doing just enough offensively to pull away from the cold-shooting Hawks.
Ethyn Brown led the Hawks with 14 points to go along with four rebounds, two steals, and a block.
Ethan Bolton also reached double figures with 13 points, recording his third double-double of the season after pulling down 11 rebounds. William Jewell was paced by Sutton, who finished with 21 points on 10-of-15 shooting, adding eight rebounds and three steals.
The Hawks return home to Pepsi Arena on Thursday, January 29, looking to get back in the win column as they host one of the top offenses in the nation in Rockhurst University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM, following the women's game.
