WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The Hawks competed in an 18-team field at the Roger Denker Open on Sunday inside the Jerry M. Hughes Athletics Center, turning in five podium finishes across a deep and competitive bracket.
Quincy was led by a strong performance from
Raymond Fernandez (174), who placed fifth with a 5–2 mark that included a lightning-fast 0:27 fall, a medical forfeit victory, and a pair of narrow decision wins.
Cody Ruiz (285) also finished fifth, posting four bonus-point victories, including a technical fall and three pins, on his way to a 4–2 day.
Ashton Gamboa (133) claimed fourth place after a 3–2 tournament highlighted by a major decision and a tie-breaker win, while
James Soliz (197) earned sixth with two wins, including a fall.
Dalton Schell (174) rounded out the podium finishes with a sixth-place finish, picking up a decision and a major decision.
Additional notable performances included
Lucas Clement (165) going 3–2 with a technical fall among his victories,
Zyan Westbrook (133) finishing 2–2 with a tech fall and a pin, and
Bryce Edwards (141) posting a 3–2 record with two close decisions and a fall. Several Hawks also picked up individual wins across the lineup, gaining valuable mat time against a large field.
The Hawks return to action on Thursday, January 22, when they host the nationally ranked Greyhounds of Indianapolis at 5:00 PM.
