INDIANAPOLIS, IN. - The Quincy University men's wrestling team kicked off its weekend in Indiana with a pair of wins over Montevallo and Kentucky Wesleyan as well as a narrow defeat to #6 Grand Valley State in the UIndy hosted Greyhound Duals on Saturday (Feb. 8).
The Hawks began with a tight 19-17 defeat of Montevallo before delivering a sound beating to Kentucky Wesleyan 34-10, finally dropping their final dual of the day with No. 6 Grand Valley State 20-27.Â
Match One vs. Montevallo
Brian Farley got QU off on the right foot with a 10-0 major at 125 as the Hawks claimed wins in three of the first four classes.
Sabian Russell picked up a 15-0 tech fall in 141 while
Zachary Harrington worked out a 13-6 decision to help put his side ahead 12-3 after four matches.Â
UM took the next four matches, sweeping 157, 165, 174 and 184 to press ahead 17-12 heading into the final two bouts of the match where
Maxim Ryner kept the Hawks alive with a 9-2 decision to pull within two at 15-17.
Caleb Groff took care of business in 285 to close out the match with an 11-1 major to propel his team to a 19-17 win.Â
Match Two vs. Kentucky Wesleyan College
Farley kicked off the match with an electric 6-3 sudden victory in 125 action before
Damien Flores took an unopposed win in 133 to press the Hawks ahead 9-0. Next were wins for Russell in 141 (11-0 Maj), Harrington in 149 (17-1 TF) and
Hunter Vernon in 157 (5-2 Dec) as Quincy swept the first five matches to a 21-0 advantage.Â
KWC got things going in 165 and 174, picking up a major in the former in a fall in the latter to cut the deficit to 21-10 heading into the final three showdowns.
QU turned back the comeback effort by claiming all three of the closing matches as
Callan Ivy took a fall win in 184 to seal the team victory before
Maxim Ryner added an 8-3 decision at 197 and
Caleb Groff took an 11-2 major in 285 to close out a comfortable 34-10 winner for Quincy.Â
Match Three vs. #6 Grand Valley State
The first two bouts of the match went to GVSU by tech fall and fall to push the Lakers ahead 11-0 before a 16-1 tech fall win for Russell at 141 and fall victory for Harrington in 149 evened the tally at 11-11.Â
Grand Valley took the next three match, claiming 157 by decision, 164 by major decision and 174 by fall to press ahead 24-11 with three matches remaining.Â
Ivy secured a 9-2 decision in his 184 match to keep Quincy alive before
Logan Colbert received a forfeit win in 197 to pull QU within striking distance trailing 24-20 heading into the heavyweight bout.
GVSU sealed the hard-fought team win with a decision victory at 285 to take the match 27-20.Â
