Explosive Second Quarter Powers Hawks over Timberwolves

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's lacrosse team welcomed the Timberwolves of Northwood University back to the brotherhood of DII men's lacrosse for NU's first contest in a quarter century on Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 11) at QU Stadium. A promising start for the visitors was quickly trounced by an 11-goal second quarter for the Hawks, who went on to claim their second straight victory with a 21-13 defeat of Northwood.

Haakon Steen had a career game to lead the way for Quincy, scoring a game-high six goals along with a trio of helpers, good for the highest single-game points total in program history as the sophomore finished with nine tallies in that department. In addition, Steen did his part in shoring up the QU defensive effort, adding three caused turnovers.

Mason Luoma found the back of the net five times in the match to push his season total to 12 to pace the team, also adding an assist in the contest for a six-point effort from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan native.

Scores from Steen and Jameson Essen in the opening seven minutes put the Hawks in front early until a pair of NU goals evened the tally at 2-2 at the 4:56 mark. Jonah Pappas took one from his own zone all the way to the house for the first goal of the sophomore defenders' career to put Quincy ahead 3-2 before a pair of late scores for Northwood found the Hawks trailing 4-3 after 15 minutes.

QU opened the second quarter with four unanswered scores from Steen, Caleb Hensley, Luoma, and Eli Cowan to build a 7-4 advantage at the 9:18 mark. The sides traded the next six goals to a 10-7 score before Quincy put together another four-goal run as Caidyn Prediger found the back of the net twice while Luoma and Steen did so once to make it 14-7. The Hawks went into the break shortly after with a 14-8 edge.

Luoma and Steen scored two goals apiece to represent the QU effort on the scoreboard in the third quarter as the Timberwolves answered with four scores of their own to keep the deficit at six heading into the final 15 minutes.

Colin Usher kicked off the scoring in the fourth, taking just 12 seconds to bury one. An Essen score at the 9:52 mark pressed the Quincy advantage to 20-12 before Connor Nock netted the final QU goal of the contest, the fourth of the senior defenders' career, as a 21-13 Hawks winner followed soon after.
