Men's Lacrosse Bested by #11 Maryville

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought match to yet another nationally-ranked opponent on Saturday (Mar. 1) in the #11 Saints of Maryville, falling by a 13-5 score at QU Stadium.

Eli Cowan spearheaded the Hawks offensive effort in the game, taking part in four of the five Quincy scores in the contest, dishing out three assists to go with a goal to lead all players in the game with four points. In addition, Connor Nock set the new program career record for caused turnovers, forcing four in the game to up his total to 74, besting the previous mark of 70.

MU got off to a strong start, netting a trio of goals in the opening quarter. Just as it looked as if the Hawks would be held scoreless in the opening frame, Mason Luoma got Quincy on the board with a goal off a feed from Haakon Steen at the 17-second mark to narrow the deficit to 3-1 after 15 minutes.

Maryville had its best quarter of the game in the next frame, scoring five goals before the break to just two QU scores. Jameson Essen netted the first Quincy goal of the quarter, scoring on a pass from Cowan at the 13:47 mark. Nearly 11 minutes later, Caidyn Prediger scored the final Hawks' goal of the half at the 2:59 mark, before a pair of Saints scores closed out an 8-3 edge at the break.

Luoma got the scoring started in the third, finding the back of the net on another dish from Cowan to pull within four, prompting a 5-0 scoring run from the Saints over the next 18 minutes or so to put Quincy in a tough spot, down 13-4 with just over nine minutes left in the game.

Cowan concluded the scoring in the game with his first goal of the contest with 1:30 left on the clock. The man-down goal, coming off an assist from Caleb Hensley, closed out a 13-5 defeat for the Hawks at the hands of the No. 11 Saints.

Hawks keeper, Austin Vetter, had a strong showing between the pipes despite the loss, turning away 25 of the 38 shots he faced, good for his second best mark of the season, trailing only a 26-save effort against Rockhurst back on 2/3.
