QUINCY, Ill. – The 20th-ranked Quincy women's wrestling team went to work in front of the home crowd on Tuesday night, picking up a pair of dual wins against Elmhurst University and the 8th-ranked Spartans of Aurora University inside Pepsi Arena. The Hawks rolled past Elmhurst 31-15 before grinding out a 24-19 victory over Aurora to move to 4-2 in dual action this season.
Quincy started the night strong against Elmhurst, bouncing back from early setbacks at 101 and 110 to take control of the dual.
Alexandra Tchekounova got the Hawks rolling with a fall at 117, and the Hawks never looked back.
Sereena Baca followed with a pin in just 1:08 at 124, earning the 70th win of her Quincy career, and
Jasmine Hopkins added another fall at 131 to keep the momentum firmly on Quincy's side.
Julia Chambers picked up a tight 6-6 criteria decision at 138, and
Siobhan Rogers and
Lillian Baynes continued the bonus-point surge with back-to-back pins at 145 and 160, with Baynes sticking her opponent in just 57 seconds.
Trinity White closed the dual with a 7-0 decision at 207 as the Hawks closed out the 31-15 team win.
The nightcap against #8 Aurora turned into a great win for the Hawks. After Aurora jumped out to an early lead with wins at 101 and 124 around a lightning-quick pin from Tchekounova at 110 and a forfeit to
Vianey Hernandez at 117, Quincy found itself in a battle through the middle weights. Aurora collected tech falls at 131 and 138 to tilt the score back in its favor, but Rogers came through in a big way at 145 with a 10-0 tech fall to pull Quincy closer. Baynes then delivered another dominant performance at 160 with a 13-2 tech fall, swinging the momentum back to the Hawks in crunch time.
Aurora edged out a 2-0 decision at 180 to keep the team score tight, and
Madisynn Crawford was awarded a forfeit at 207, sealing the 24-19 victory over the 8th-ranked Spartans and punctuating a 2-0 night for the Hawks on their home mat.
Quincy will look to build on Tuesday's momentum as they turn their attention to Sunday, when they host the conference duals inside Pepsi Arena starting at 9:00 AM.
