INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Quincy University men's wrestling team officially opened its 2025–26 season this past Saturday at the Luther Hill Open in Indianola, Iowa, hosted at Blake Fieldhouse. While no team score was kept, the Hawks made a statement to open the year, coming away with three individual champions and numerous top-five placers across both the Freshman/Sophomore and Open divisions. The season debut showcased a promising blend of veteran leadership and young depth, setting a strong tone for the months ahead.
In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, several Hawks wrestled their way to the podium with standout performances. At 141 pounds,
Bryce Edwards had an impressive start to the season, finishing second with a 4–1 record that included a fall.
Isaiah Nichols battled through a tough 157-pound bracket to take third place, finishing 4–1 with both a fall and a technical fall. At 165 pounds,
Tate Miller grinded out five wins to secure third place, notching a fall along the way, while
Jackson Jones finished fifth at the same weight with a 4–2 record. Heavyweight
Roy Phelps also found himself on the podium, placing fourth after going 4–2 with a fall. Other strong efforts included
Brian Farley (125 lbs, 3–2) and Dimitri Bao-Washington (141 lbs, 3–2), who both earned falls and technical falls, while
Jack Miller (165 lbs, 2–2) and
James Soliz (197 lbs, 2–2) added valuable early-season wins.
The Open Division saw even more success for Quincy's upperclassmen, who turned in a dominant collective performance.
Callan Ivy captured the 184-pound championship, going 3–0 with a fall and two major decisions in a commanding run.
Hunter Vernon was equally dominant, winning the 165-pound title with a 3–0 record that included a technical fall. At 133 pounds, junior
Te'Andre Allen made a statement in his QU debut, winning all three of his matches and posting a technical fall en route to a first-place finish.
Judah Yates (197 lbs) and
Sabian Russell (149 lbs) both placed second, with Yates earning a technical fall and Russell recording two tech falls and a major decision in his 3–1 outing. The strong weekend also marked a milestone moment for Russell, who surpassed 50 career individual wins during his runner-up finish.
Lucas Clement (157 lbs) added a third-place finish after going 3–1 with a fall and a major decision, while
Gavin Morawitz (165 lbs) finished fourth and
Caleb Groff (285 lbs) placed fifth, winning three matches with both a fall and a major decision.
Other notable performances came from
Raymond Fernandez (184 lbs, 3–2), who picked up two falls and a major decision, and
Cody Ruiz (285 lbs, 2–2), who scored a pair of major decisions. Overall, Quincy wrestlers produced a strong showing across every weight class, combining for multiple bonus-point wins throughout the day.
The Hawks will be back in action this weekend as they travel to Atchison, Kansas, to compete at Benedictine College in a two-day event on November 7th and 8th from Ralph Nolan Gymnasium.
