PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Hawks are back in the win column after another elite shooting performance, as Quincy shot a blistering 62.8% from the field to take down the Gorillas of Pittsburg State 80–74 inside John Lance Arena. QU led for 70% of the night and never trailed in the second half, riding their most efficient offensive outing of the season to a big non-conference win.
Quincy endured a slow offensive start, committing a pair of early turnovers as Pitt State jumped out to an 11–5 lead in the opening five minutes. But once the Hawks settled in, the offense came alive. A pair of three-point plays inside, a quick burst from
Herb Martin, and four straight points from
Tiernan Stynes powered a 15–4 run that flipped the score to 20–15 with 11 minutes remaining.
The Gorillas responded with a 9–2 push of their own to retake the lead, and the two sides traded punches throughout the final stretch of the half. With the game tied and under a minute to go, Quincy seized momentum,
Max Booher knocked down a jumper, and then drilled a three with just seconds left, sending QU to the locker room up 38–34.
Quincy wasted no time reestablishing command, opening the second half 4-for-6 from the field. Five early points from Booher pushed the lead to 48–40, and the Hawks would stretch the margin to 10 before Pitt State clawed back with a 9–2 run to make it a one-possession game.
From there, the game turned into a heavyweight exchange. Both sides traded buckets, but Quincy's offensive efficiency kept them in front. With the Hawks clinging to a 67–64 lead with just over five minutes left, QU delivered the knockout stretch, a 10–2 run fueled by five points from
Camren Kincaid, pushed the advantage to 11 entering the final three minutes.
Pitt State made one last push, cutting the deficit to five in the final minute, but the Hawks' defense stood firm. QU forced five consecutive misses from the Gorillas down the stretch and held on for an impressive 80–74 road victory over a projected top-five MIAA team.
Quincy was unstoppable offensively, shooting over 60% for the second time this season and now sitting at 53% shooting as a team through five games. The Hawks finished 27-for-43 from the floor (62.8%), while Pitt State fired up 75 shots and made just 30 (40%).
The Gorillas dominated the offensive glass with 22 offensive rebounds, a continued area of concern for QU, who has allowed 12+ in four games. Even so, Pitt State turned those boards into only 14 second-chance points.
QU's efficiency extended to the perimeter, hitting 5-of-9 from deep (55.6%), while Pitt State went ice-cold at 3-for-28. Quincy also lived at the free-throw line, attempting 33 foul shots compared to just 11 for the Gorillas, though the Hawks converted 21 of those attempts.
Tiernan Stynes bounced back in a major way after a quieter outing against Missouri Western, finishing with 23 points on an efficient 9-of-14 shooting. He played all 40 minutes, added five rebounds, and chipped in an assist while once again leading Quincy in scoring for the second time this season.
Max Booher continued his strong stretch of play, scoring 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting and knocking down three triples. He also grabbed six rebounds and provided steady production throughout the night, marking his third consecutive game with 15 or more points.
Camren Kincaid added 13 points while shooting 4-of-7 from the field. He came through in crunch time, scoring five key points during the Hawks' late 10–2 run that pushed the lead back to double digits and ultimately helped seal the win.
Down low,
Jakeb Wallingford made a significant defensive impact, recording three blocks for the second straight game. He added three rebounds and two assists while anchoring the interior and disrupting multiple Pitt State scoring opportunities in the paint.
Quincy moves to 3–2 on the season and will now enjoy a full week of preparation before opening GLVC play next Monday, December 1, inside Pepsi Arena at 7:30 PM following the women's game.
