ST. JOSEPH, MO. - The Hawks traveled west to take on the Griffons of Missouri Western for their final midweek contest of the year on Tuesday (Apr. 23). Quincy surrendered six runs in the first three innings and weren't able to catch back up as MWSU used 13 hits to score 11 runs and take the ballgame by an 11-6 score.
Missouri Western opened the scoring in its first trip to the plate, using a triple, walk and steal to put two men in scoring position for a run-scoring ground out. An error on the infield followed up by a pair of singles scored two more before the final run of the inning came around on a stolen base to make it 4-0. MWSU added another run in both the second and third innings on an RBI single and a sac fly.
QU halved the deficit in the top of the fourth using a walk from
Austin Simpson along with a single from
Joe Huffman to set up a three-run blast off the bat of
JD Ortiz. Quincy added another in the fifth on a one-out solo shot from
Brock Boynton to make it 6-4.
The Griffons used a pair of singles and a ground ball to bring in another run in the fifth before surrendering a bases loaded wild pitch in the top of the sixth to plate a run for Quincy. MWSU busted the game open in the bottom of the sixth, using four hits, including a long ball, to score three runs and press the advantage to 10-5.
Missouri Western scored again an inning later on a passed ball before the Hawks pushed across the final run of the contest in the top of the eighth on an Ortiz single to drive in Huffman from his double in the previous at-bat and bring the final tally to 11-6.
