WESTFIELD, Ind. - The Hawks kicked off a four-game set with University of Indianapolis on Friday (Apr. 12). The Greyhounds, who are ranked second in the league standings, stole away the victory in extra innings responding to three Hawk runs in the 10th with four of their own in the bottom half to seal a 6-5 defeat for Quincy.
It was a pitchers duel for much of the game as Quincy didn't get on the board until the fifth inning and Hawks starter,
Griffin Kirn, held the Greyhounds scoreless for all seven innings of his start. Kirn surrendered a hit and a walk while striking out nine hitters in his first four innings of work to bring QU to the plate in the fifth.
A one-out walk from
Connor Simons followed by an error put two men on for a RBI double from
Jake Vitale down the right field line to put his side ahead.
Brock Boynton singled through the right side of the infield to drive in the final run of the inning and put the Hawks up 2-0.
Kirn delivered three more innings of scoreless baseball allowing only two more hits while collecting another pair of punchouts to raise his tally to 11 before being lifted in the eighth.
UIndy took advantage of four walks in the eighth with a single to drive in two and knot the score in the late innings.
The Hawks tacked on three runs in the top of the 10th inning, using a one-out walk from Boynton followed by a single from
David Broughton to put two men on before a fielders choice and intentional walk loaded the based for a run-scoring wild pitch. A single from
Joe Huffman in the next at-bat plated another pair to put Quincy ahead 5-2.
A single and two extra base hits narrowed the margin to 5-3 and put two men on before a walk loaded the bases for a walk-off, bases-clearing single to give the Greyhounds a 6-5 win in extras.
