Hawks Slug Five Homers in Win Over UINDY

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The ballpark changed but the opponent did not as the Hawks faced off against the Greyhounds for a single ballgame on Saturday (Apr. 13) with field conditions forcing not only a change of venue--to Bloomington North HS--but also a delayed 6:00 PM start and rescheduled doubleheader to tomorrow.

Quincy pounded out 14 hits, eight of them for extra bases, to put 11 runs on the board getting two long balls and six RBI out of Dustin Dupont while starter, Kobe Essien, fanned 12 hitters on the mound in an 11-6 winner to even the series at a game apiece.

UIndy plated a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single before Quincy responded with three runs in the top of the second. With two men on Dupont left the yard for his first of the day to put QU ahead 3-1. Indianapolis responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half to knot the score after two.

The Hawks entered the scoring column again in the fifth, using a one-out home run to left center by JD Ortiz to move out in front 4-3. The Greyhounds answered once again for a pair of runs in the bottom half to build a 5-4 edge.

An opposite field homer to left to lead off the seventh inning off the bat of Austin Simpson brought the tally back even until a Brock Boynton blast in the next inning put QU ahead 6-5. Still not finished in the top half of the eighth, RBI singles from Ortiz and Connor Simons gave the Hawks a little room with an 8-5 advantage.

A couple scoreless frames from Josh Hempelman in the sixth and seventh followed up by another zero in the eighth from Ben Draeger brought Quincy to the dish to plate the Hawks final runs in the ninth.

A base hit from Boynton followed up by a double from David Broughton put two on for another three-run big-fly from Dupont to make it 11-5. Indianapolis got one back on a solo shot in the bottom of the last but couldn't manage any more as QU came away with the 11-6 winner to deadlock the series at 1-1.

Next Up

Quincy is in for the not often seen Sunday doubleheader of seven inning contests tomorrow (Apr. 14) as the Hawks look to claim the series with a sweep of the ballgames starting at 11:00 AM CST.
