LIBERTY, Mo. - The Hawks split a pair of games with the Cardinals of William Jewell on Saturday (Mar. 9) as contests number two and three in the four game set with WJC. Quincy used nine hits with three of them leaving the yard to take game one 7-3 before dropping game two 11-7.
Game One
David Broughton got things started with a bang, depositing a ball over the right field fence in the first at-bat of the game to put the Hawks ahead from the get-go. A walk from
Dustin Dupont and a single from
Austin Simpson put a man on third for a RBI infield single for
Cole Erickson to make it 2-0.
In the fourth a HBP for Erickson followed by a single from
Harry Fandre put a runner in scoring position for a RBI single to left field from
Joe Huffman, pressing the advantage to 3-0 in the shortened, seven inning contest.
Austin Simpson added another run to the tally the next inning, blasting a homer to right to make it 4-0 before the Cardinals finally got to Hawks starter,
Kobe Essien in the fifth. A pair of one-out singles tailed by a double drove in both runs to half the deficit at 4-2 after five.
Quincy answered with another score in the sixth, using a single from Fandre followed by a double from Huffman to advance a runner to third where a wild pitch would bring in the run to make it 5-2.
William Jewell scored its final run in the sixth without recording a hit, taking advantage of an error and two wild pitches to pull within three before a two-out, two-run homer from Erickson in the seventh concluded the scoring.
Brett Panick came on in the seventh to shut the door and give the Hawks a 7-3 win.
Game Two
The Hawks struck early with the long ball as they did in the first game, this time waiting for the second hitter of the contest to leave the yard as
Brock Boynton ripped a one-out bomb to right. Shortly after singles from Dupont and Simpson along with a fielders choice put a runner in scoring position for a RBI single from Erickson to make it 2-0.
WJC hung a nine-spot in the bottom half of the first, sending 13 hitters to the plate to build a 9-2 advantage after the games first six outs. The Cardinals added another run in the next half inning to build a healthy advantage after two innings.
QU put up five runs in the fifth inning to make things interesting down the stretch. A single and HBP set up an RBI double from Simpson followed another double from
JD Ortiz to chase home another pair of runs. Erickson ripped a third straight double into the left centerfield gap to bring home Ortiz. Three batters later a single from
Adam Lewis slimmed the margin to 10-7.
Another run for William Jewell in the bottom of the fifth concluded the scoring and closed out an 11-7 winner for the Cardinals. Lefty,
Tom Conzemius pitched four and a third of two-run ball in relief along with a clean inning for
