LIBERTY, Mo. - The Hawks closed out opening weekend of GLVC conference play with a victory over the Cardinals of William Jewell on Sunday (Mar. 10). 26 runs were scored between the sides with 16 of them going in favor of Quincy as QU outhit WJC by 10 with seven home runs in a 16-10 winner to claim the series three games to one.
The Hawks got a pair of runners in scoring position to open the game but couldn't convert, bringing William Jewell to the plate for a five-run bottom of the first, using three hits, a pair of HBP's and a walk to lead 5-0 after six outs.
JD Ortiz led off the next half inning with a homer to right field before six of the next seven Hawks hitters reached base safely bringing in runs on a RBI fielders choice from
David Broughton and RBI singles from
Brock Boynton,
Dustin Dupont and
Austin Simpson to even the tally at 5-5.
Jewell briefly regained the advantage in the third, using a single and sac fly to score a pair. An HBP for
Adam Lewis along with an infield single for Broughton set up a three-run blast from Boynton. Two batters later Simpson lifted a one-out opposite field home run to left putting Quincy ahead 9-7 in the fourth.
Both teams added a run in the fifth with the first coming on a double from Boynton in the top half followed by a Cardinals run on an error in the bottom half to make it 10-8.
Cole Erickson lifted another Hawks homer in the sixth, a two-run shot to press the lead to four.
Quincy added another in the top of the seventh on the first of two long balls for Lewis before escaping a bases loaded situation in the bottom of the seventh surrendering only a single run.
The final four runs of the game all came on homers with another for Lewis to lead off the ninth along with a two-run round-tripper for Dupont shortly after to make it 16-9. WJC plated the games final run on a homer in the bottom of the ninth to seal a 16-10 victory for Quincy.
Next Up
The Hawks are on the road once again next weekend, traveling to St. Louis to take on the Saints of Maryville for a four-game set. Game one is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start on Friday (Mar. 15).
