Hawks Split Twin Bill at Maryville

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Hawks continued their GLVC league play with games two and three of their four-game conference set against the Saints of Maryville on Saturday (Mar. 16). Quincy came away victorious in game one behind a five-run second inning to take the first seven inning contest by a 9-5 score before falling by the same tally in game two, a 9-5 winner for the Saints.

Game One

QU got on the board early, scratching across a run in its first at-bat thanks to a two-out HBP for Dustin Dupont followed by a RBI double down the line in right from Austin Simpson to put his side ahead after the ballgames first half inning.

Kobe Essien worked a trio of fly balls in the bottom of the first to bring Quincy to plate to score more runs in the second. A lead-off walk followed up by an HBP and a single from Joe Huffman loaded the bases for a Jack Haggard RBI walk to plate the first run. David Broughton lifted a sac fly to right to bring in the second score of the frame before a three-run bomb to right field two hitters later off the bat of Dupont gave the Hawks a 6-0 lead through their first six outs of the contest.

MU broke through in the third, using a base hit, walk and three-run blast to half the deficit. In the resilient fashion Hawk fans know all too well, Quincy responded in turn, putting three runs of its own on the board in the fourth. With a pair of men on, a RBI double to left from Dupont chased home both runners before a RBI single up the middle from Cole Erickson fully replenished the lead to six runs at 9-3.

Maryville tacked on a couple runs in the bottom of the fourth, using a two RBI singles to narrow the margin to 9-5 where it would stay for the remainder of the game.

Tim Reinholz came on in relief in the third inning, pitching effectively and doing well to bridge the gap until he was lifted in the seventh. Roman Harrison came on to close the door in the final frame and did just that, delivering the Hawks a 9-5 victory in the first contest.

Game Two

The Saints got on the board first in the second game of the day, getting to QU starter, Tom Conzemius, for a run in the bottom of the first on a triple and wild pitch.

JD Ortiz formulated an instant response in the Hawk half of the second, blasting a lead-off homer to right to knot the score up. Following a double to right center from Connor Simons, a single from Huffman drove in Simons to make it 2-1 Quincy.

MU led off the bottom of the second with three-straight singles before Conzemius got a pair of fly outs and a fielders choice to tightrope out of danger, bringing Simpson to the plate in the next half inning to bolster the QU lead to 3-1 with an opposite field home run.

Quincy got on the board again in the fifth by the same means as Simpson took another one for a ride, this time a two-run shot to right to propel the Hawks advantage even further to 5-1.

Maryville scored once more in the fifth, tagging Conzemius for another run in his final inning of work on a double tailed by an RBI single to make it 5-2 after five and leave the graduate student in line for the win in his first ever collegiate start on the bump.

It was a sixth inning to forget for Quincy as the Saints took over the ballgame, sending 12 hitters to the plate for seven runs to burst ahead 9-5 with only the seventh inning remaining. QU got a pair of runners on in the top of the last but couldn't make anything of it as MU claimed second contest of the day 9-5.

Next Up

The Hawks finish off the series tomorrow (Mar. 17) with the rubber match. Quincy will look to salvage a split of the battle of GLVC heavyweights starting at 1:00 PM.
