Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Hawks finished off their four-game series with the Saints of Maryville on Sunday (Mar. 17). Quincy out-hit MU by six pounding out 13 hits, but a five-spot on the scoreboard from MU in the seventh proved to be the difference-maker in a narrow 8-7 loss for QU.
Quincy opened the game with a pair of men on but didn't capitalize on the opportunity, giving way for the Saints to put the games first run on the board with a one-out big fly to center in the home half of the first.
Later in the top of the third,
Brock Boynton led off with an infield single before a double from
Dustin Dupont put two runners in scoring position. The Hawks used a little small ball to take the advantage, utilizing a pair of well placed ground balls on the infield to drive in Boynton and Dupont and make it 2-1.
Maryville got a run back in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of hits followed up by a double play to even the tally at 2-2 before QU returned the favor in the next half inning with a run of its own. A walk, HBP and grounder to the right side found men on second and third for a
JD Ortiz RBI grounder to second to put the Hawks back on top.
The Quincy lead was a brief one as the Saints fired a shot over the center field wall in the first at-bat of the half inning to knot the score 3-3.
All was quiet until the bottom of the seventh when things went awry for the Hawks. Two walks, two hit-by-pitches and an error ground the first run home before another came in on a wild pitch. The next hitter cleared the bases with a three-run round-tripper to put MU ahead 8-3 after seven.
QU responded in the top of the eighth inning, using a walk from
Joe Huffman and a RBI double from
David Broughton to get one back until a Dupont single two batters later plated yet another run.
Austin Simpson put an exclamation point on the inning with a homer in the next AB to narrow the margin to one at 8-7.
Charlie Allison led off the Hawk half of the ninth with a double before being pinch-run for. The tying run was cut down on a bang-bang play at third base followed by a strikeout and popup to seal Quincy's fate with an 8-7 loss.
