QUINCY, Ill. - The Hawks notched their first mark in the win column on Saturday (Oct. 5), taking down the Cavaliers of Walsh University 35-19 at QU Stadium.
CJ Jackson led the way for Quincy, finding the end zone on three occasions, twice on the ground and once through the air while collecting 74 total yards.
The first 15 minutes of the game didn't yield a single point for either side as the defenses reigned supreme. All but three drives in the quarter ended via three-and-out as the Hawks finally got something cooking in the final seconds of the quarter on a 38-yard run from
Chance Newton putting Quincy at the WU 1-yard line to open the second.
Shortly into the second quarter, Jackson scored his first touchdown of the game on a three-yard tote to put the Hawks ahead 7-0 after a
Jensen Laughlin PAT at the 14:14 mark.
Later in the quarter, Quincy ripped off another scoring drive, this time starting at their own 28 at the 6:24 mark, marching down the field on 12 plays for 72 yard capped off by another Jackson touchdown run, this time only a single yard on fourth and goal. Jackson found the end zone once again on the two-point conversion to make it 15-0 heading into the half.
After getting a stop to open the second half, the Hawks found the end zone again in their first drive of the third quarter. 10 plays for 59 yards over nearly six minutes culminated in a 10-yard touchdown connection from
Deuce Allaway to
Camden Pye to make it 21-0 at the 3:50 mark of the frame.
Walsh put its first points on the board shortly after, using a 74-yard touchdown reception just three plays later to narrow the deficit to 21-7.
QU responded with another touchdown of their own, this time from Allaway to Jackson for the 21-yard score to put Quincy ahead 28-7 and give Jackson his third score of the contest with just eight seconds remaining in the third.
WU added another touchdown midway through the quarter, receiving the ball at the QU 30 and taking just six plays and 1:51 off the clock before finding the end zone. Following a failed two-point attempt, QU led 28-13.
The Hawks got their final score of the game from the defense as
Rollin Armes picked off a pass and ran it back 28 yards for the pick-six to put his team ahead 35-13 with about three and a half minutes to play.
Walsh scored the final points of the contest with a touchdown just four seconds before the end of the game, but it was far too little too late as Quincy claimed its first win of the season 35-19 over the Cavaliers.
