Box Score NORTH CANTON, Oh. – In week two MSFL action, the Quincy University sprint football team defeated Walsh University in the Roman Pizza Rivalry game, 27-14. With the win, the Hawks move to 1-1 on the young season.
Quincy reached the end zone on its first drive of the game. After a 35-yard interception return from
Ja'Quez Hicks, QU found itself in great field position at the WU 25.
Nick Manzo connected with
Ethan Hentges for 14 yards and
Xavier Carr for nine more through the air to set up a two-yard tote into the end zone for
Chance Newton.
Down 7-0, Walsh had a touchdown drive of its own, scoring with 1:54 left in the first quarter to draw within one before a huge blocked PAT attempt from
Ray Lingard kept the Hawks ahead 7-6 to round out the scoring in the first half of play.
The Hawks had the chance to supplement the lead in the waning seconds of the first half, but couldn't make good on a 29-yard field goal attempt to take a 7-6 lead into the locker room.
In similar fashion to the first quarter, Quincy opened the second half with a touchdown drive. Nine plays, 61 yards capped off by a nine-yard TD reception from
Camden Pye put QU ahead 13-6. This time the Cavaliers came through with a blocked field goal to deny QU the extra point and keep it a seven-point game.
Later in the third, WU found pay dirt for the second time. At the 6:13 mark an eight-yard rushing score and a successful two-point conversion put Walsh ahead for the first time at 14-13.
After a three-and-out from the Walsh offense,
Exavier Hinton turned in a 33-yard punt return from the QU 49 to the WU 18 to set up the Quincy offensive unit in good field position with 51 seconds remaining in the third.
Two plays later, Manzo found
Camden Pye for the 18-yard score to make it 19-14 Hawks.
Jesse Morales-Hernandez made good on the two-point conversion try to further the advantage to 21-14 heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
The Hawks defense continued to get the job done, not allowing the Cavaliers to enter the scoring column in the fourth quarter. QU's offense found the end zone once more, this time an 81-yard, 14 play drive that ate up over 10 minutes of play clock, ending with a 10-yard touchdown reception for
Gregory Quince. After a field point after attempt, the Hawks walked away with a 27-14 victory in the Roman Pizza Rivalry game.
Quincy will back in action next Saturday (Sep. 30) playing host to the Crimson Wave of Calumet College of St. Joseph at QU Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 6:30 PM.
