LAWTON, Okla. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team completed a perfect weekend at the Cameron Invitational on Saturday, sweeping host Cameron University before defeating Newman University in four sets inside Aggie Gymnasium. The Hawks finished the tournament 4-0, extended their winning streak to four matches, and improved to 5-3 on the season.
Game One: Quincy 3, Cameron 0
Neither team was able to create much separation early in the opening set, with Cameron holding a slim 9-8 advantage before Quincy produced the first big run of the match.
Erin Matzke powered a 5-0 burst with three kills to give the Hawks a 13-9 lead. The Aggies continued to hang around and eventually regained the advantage at 22-21, but Quincy answered by scoring four of the final five points. Matzke added two more kills during the closing stretch as the Hawks took the opener 25-23. Quincy totaled a match-high 16 kills in the set and hit .167, while Cameron finished with 10 kills and a .116 hitting percentage.
The second set belonged to Quincy from start to finish. The Hawks produced five separate runs of at least three points as they steadily built their advantage. Cameron remained within reach at 18-14 before Quincy slammed the door with seven unanswered points to close the frame, aided by two service aces and three Aggie errors. The Hawks were at their most efficient offensively, hitting .344 with 13 kills and just two errors, while holding Cameron to .097 in the 25-14 win.
Cameron appeared ready to extend the match in the third, building a 15-9 lead as Quincy committed 11 errors over the opening stretch. The Hawks finally found their rhythm with a 3-0 run before completely flipping the set with a season-best 10 consecutive points. Quincy scored in nearly every way during the surge, recording two aces, three kills and a block while also capitalizing on Cameron miscues to turn the deficit into a 22-16 advantage. The Aggies never recovered, and Monika Bíliková finished the sweep with a service ace for a 25-19 victory. Quincy hit .071 in the final set, but Cameron managed only three kills and hit -.174.
The sweep was Quincy's first of the season, with the Hawks holding Cameron to just 21 kills and a .041 hitting percentage for the match. Quincy totaled 38 kills while adding eight service aces and 56 digs.
Amber Glen turned in a season-high 23 digs, finishing just three shy of her career high.
Milica Stamenic recorded four service aces for the second consecutive match, while Bíliková finished with eight kills on .583 hitting, four total blocks and a season-high 11.5 points. It marked her second straight match reaching double figures in points. Matzke and
Selin Turgut each added nine kills, with Matzke hitting .304.
Game Two: Quincy 3, Newman 1
Quincy carried its momentum into the tournament finale and jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the opening set behind multiple four-point runs. The Hawks maintained the five-point margin and led 20-15 before Newman began to chip away. Quincy still held a 22-18 advantage when the Jets rattled off five straight points behind two blocks and three Hawk errors to move ahead 23-22. Quincy tied the set at 23, but Newman scored the final two points to steal the opener 25-23. Neither offense found much rhythm, with Quincy hitting .045 and Newman .047 as both sides recorded 10 kills and eight errors.
The Hawks responded immediately in the second set, racing ahead 5-1 behind a pair of
Aysem Kocaalp service aces. Quincy continued to pile on with multiple runs and never allowed Newman back into the frame, cruising to a 25-14 victory. The Hawks hit .257 with 15 kills, while their defense limited the Jets to four kills and a -.074 hitting percentage.
Momentum swung repeatedly in the third set as the teams exchanged runs of two, three, and four points throughout the frame. Newman eventually moved ahead 23-22, but Quincy had the final answer. The Hawks scored three consecutive points, with
Macey Rocco and Emma Massey combining on a key block during the closing run to secure the 25-23 victory. Quincy overcame 11 attacking errors in the set, finishing with 12 kills and a .021 hitting percentage, while Newman hit .125.
The fourth set was just as tight, with neither team able to build a lead larger than three. The score remained tied at 18-18 before Quincy finally created separation, scoring seven of the final nine points behind three kills from Kocaalp. The Hawks saved their best offensive set for last, hitting .273 with 16 kills and just four errors while holding Newman to .000 hitting with seven kills and seven errors. Quincy closed the set 25-20 to finish off a perfect weekend in Lawton.
Quincy's defense held Newman to a season-low opponent hitting percentage of .028 for the match. The Hawks finished with 53 kills, 74 digs, and seven service aces while forcing 27 Newman attack errors.
Kocaalp led Quincy with a season-high-tying 16 kills and a season-best 18 points while adding two service aces. Turgut recorded 12 kills and 16 digs for her second double-double of the season while surpassing 300 collegiate kills. Rocco dished out 45 assists and collected a career-high 11 digs for the first double-double of her career.
Matzke made her 100th career appearance in a Quincy uniform and surpassed 750 career points, finishing with 11 kills for her fourth double-digit kill performance of the season out of the middle. Glen added 16 digs and surpassed 500 career digs, while Stamenic chipped in 14 digs and two service aces.
The Hawks will look to carry their four-match winning streak into Memphis, Tennessee, next weekend for the Christian Brothers Invitational. Quincy opens the tournament on Friday, September 11th, against Miles College at 11:00 AM before facing LeMoyne-Owen College at 3:00 PM. The Hawks close the weekend Saturday against Southern New Hampshire University at 9:00 AM and host Christian Brothers University at 3:00 PM.
