MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team continued its hot stretch Friday, picking up a pair of sweeps on the opening day of the CBU Patriot Day Classic inside Canale Arena. The Hawks opened the day with a dominant victory over LeMoyne-Owen before taking down Miles College to extend their winning streak to six matches.
Game One: Quincy 3, LeMoyne-Owen 0
LeMoyne-Owen grabbed an early 5-3 advantage in the opening set, but Quincy quickly took control with seven unanswered points. Monika Bíliková powered the run with three kills as the Hawks turned the early deficit into a 10-5 lead. Quincy controlled the remainder of the frame, using several three and four-point runs to pull away for a 25-15 victory. The Hawks hit .323 with 12 kills and only two errors, while holding the Magicians to .065 with eight kills and six errors.
The second set was Quincy's most dominant frame of the season. Holding a narrow 5-4 advantage, the Hawks exploded for 15 consecutive points, using contributions from the service line, offense, and defense to completely break the set open. Quincy cruised from there, hitting .500 with 13 kills and just one error while limiting LeMoyne-Owen to four kills and a -.038 hitting percentage.
The momentum carried directly into the third set as Quincy scored the first six points behind two kills from
Aysem Kocaalp and three consecutive service aces from
Macey Rocco. Leading 12-4, the Hawks put together another 7-0 run while capitalizing on several LeMoyne-Owen errors to stretch the margin to 19-4. Quincy finished off the sweep 25-11, posting its best offensive set of the match at .524 with 12 kills and only one error.
It was Quincy's most efficient offensive performance of the season, as the Hawks hit .434 with 37 kills and a season-low four attack errors. Quincy also recorded 13 service aces, marking its second double-digit ace performance of the year, while LeMoyne-Owen finished at just .037 hitting. It marked the fourth time this season the Hawks have held an opponent below .100.
Kocaalp led the offense with 12 kills on just 19 swings, hitting .526 and surpassing 100 points for the season through nine matches. It marked her fourth double-digit kill performance of the year.
Erin Matzke added eight kills while hitting .636, and Bíliková was perfect offensively with four kills on four attempts.
Rocco filled the stat sheet with 22 assists, a career-high 12 digs, and four service aces. The performance pushed her past 100 career digs and marked her second match this season with four aces.
Game Two: Quincy 3, Miles 0
The tournament's second match started as a game of runs, with neither team able to establish much separation through the opening half of the first set. Quincy held just a 13-12 advantage before taking control late, scoring 12 of the final 16 points to pull away for a 25-16 victory.
The Hawks hit .267 with 13 kills and five errors in the opener, while their defense frustrated the Miles attack, holding the Golden Bears to six kills and a -.118 hitting percentage.
Miles flipped the script early in the second set and built a 12-7 advantage behind several short runs. Quincy responded in a massive way. The Hawks rattled off 16 consecutive points, their second run of at least 15 points on the day, to completely turn the set around and cruise to a 25-14 victory. Quincy hit .280 with 12 kills and five errors while holding Miles to five kills, eight errors and a -.130 hitting percentage.
Quincy wasted little time taking control of the third, using a 6-0 run to build an early 7-1 advantage before another five unanswered points stretched the lead to 12-3. The Hawks continued to string together runs from there and closed out their second sweep of the day with a 25-12 victory. Quincy saved its most efficient attacking set for last, totaling 15 kills and only three errors for a .279 hitting percentage, while Miles finished at .070.
The Hawks held Miles to a -.040 hitting percentage, their best defensive mark of the season, while finishing at .276 with 40 kills and 13 errors. Quincy also recorded eight blocks, six service aces, and 50 digs in another balanced performance.
Kocaalp turned in another standout performance with 13 kills on .313 hitting and a season-high 12 digs, recording the first double-double of her collegiate career. It was her fifth double-digit kill match of the season and her third straight.
Olivia Curry added nine kills on .353 hitting, while Bíliková recorded a season-high four service aces.
The two victories extend Quincy's winning streak to six matches as the Hawks look to complete another perfect tournament weekend on Saturday. Quincy takes on Southern New Hampshire University at 9:00 AM before closing the CBU Patriot Day Classic against host Christian Brothers University at 1:00 PM.
