MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team completed another perfect tournament weekend on Saturday, defeating Southern New Hampshire University and host Christian Brothers University in four sets apiece to sweep the CBU Patriot Day Classic. The victories extended the Hawks' winning streak to eight matches and improved Quincy to 9-3 on the season.
Game One: Quincy 3, Southern New Hampshire 1
Southern New Hampshire took control of the opening set with Quincy leading 4-3, rattling off eight consecutive points behind three service aces and a pair of blocks. The Hawks were unable to recover from the run as their offense struggled to find a rhythm, hitting just .036 with eight kills and seven errors. SNHU hit .139 with 12 kills and seven errors while adding four service aces and four blocks to take the set 25-21.
Quincy responded immediately in the second, jumping out to an 8-4 lead behind a quick 4-0 run that featured a pair of big blocks from
Macey Rocco and Monika Bíliková. The Hawks maintained control throughout the frame, never allowing the margin to shrink below four.
Erin Matzke powered the attack with four kills as Quincy evened the match with a 25-19 victory. The Hawks hit .280 with 11 kills and four errors while holding SNHU to .069 with 10 kills and eight errors.
The Hawks took complete control in the third set, racing out to a 7-1 lead behind strong serving and several SNHU errors. Quincy never looked back, with Matzke adding three more kills as the Hawks cruised to a 25-12 victory. Quincy hit a scorching .444 with 10 kills and just two errors while adding four blocks, and the defense held SNHU to a -.154 hitting percentage with five kills and nine errors.
It was more of the same in the fourth. With the score tied at 6-6, Quincy broke the set open with eight unanswered points before ending the match on another 6-0 run for a second straight 25-12 victory.
Selin Turgut turned in her best offensive set of the season with five kills as the Hawks hit .563 with 10 kills and only one error. SNHU was held to -.129 with six kills and 10 errors.
Quincy finished the match hitting .287, its second-best mark of the season, while holding Southern New Hampshire to -.008. It marked the second straight match in which the Hawks held their opponent to a negative hitting percentage. Quincy also totaled 11 blocks, its fourth match this season reaching double figures at the net.
Matzke was nearly unstoppable, recording 11 kills without an error on 14 attempts for a season-best .786 hitting percentage. It marked her fifth double-digit kill performance of the season. Bíliková added five kills on .714 hitting and six total blocks, reaching six blocks for the second time this season. Rocco set a career high with four total blocks while directing the offense with 32 assists. Kocaalp added eight kills and surpassed 100 kills for the season, while
Olivia Curry moved past 100 points on the year.
Game Two: Quincy 3, Christian Brothers 1
The Hawks jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead in the tournament finale, but Christian Brothers answered with seven straight points to move ahead 9-6. Quincy responded with a 5-0 run of its own as momentum swung back and forth throughout the opening frame. With the score tied at 19-19, CBU delivered the decisive stretch, scoring the final six points to take the set 25-19. Quincy hit .176 with 11 kills and five errors, while Christian Brothers came out firing offensively with 18 kills and a .421 hitting percentage.
Quincy completely flipped the match in the second set. The Hawks used runs of three, six and five points to build a commanding 15-4 advantage and never looked back, cruising to a 25-14 victory. Quincy hit .290 with 13 kills and only four errors while holding CBU to .000 hitting with nine kills and nine errors.
The third set was a battle from start to finish. Christian Brothers raced out to a 12-6 lead before the Hawks worked their way back and eventually grabbed a 14-13 advantage. Neither team could create separation from there, with both sides earning multiple set-point opportunities during an extended finish. Quincy finally broke through by scoring two straight points to win the thriller 31-29 and take a 2-1 match lead. The Hawks totaled 17 kills in the frame and hit .117, while holding CBU to .074.
With their eighth straight victory in sight, the Hawks came out aggressive in the fourth and jumped ahead 5-1 behind kills from three different players. CBU responded with a 5-0 run to eventually even the score at 8-8, and the set remained tight deep into the frame. Quincy finally created separation late with a pair of three-point runs, scoring six of the final eight points to take the set 25-21 and complete a perfect weekend in Memphis. The Hawks finished the fourth with a match-high 18 kills while hitting .195, compared to .100 for Christian Brothers.
Turgut delivered a career performance to lead Quincy, setting a career high with 15 kills while adding 11 digs for her third double-double of the season and surpassing 400 career points. Rocco recorded a career-high 15 digs to go along with 43 assists, while Kocaalp finished with 14 kills and a season-high 18 digs for her second double-double of the year.
Matzke continued to pile up milestones, finishing with 11 kills on .450 hitting for her sixth double-digit kill match of the season while surpassing 600 career kills and 800 career points and reaching 300 career blocks. Curry added 10 kills for her third double-digit performance of the year, while Bíliková chipped in eight kills and 10 points.
The Hawks close non-conference tournament play riding an eight-match winning streak and will turn their attention to GLVC action. Quincy opens conference play on Friday, September 18th at 6:00 PM, traveling to Romeoville, Illinois to take on Lewis University inside Neil Carey Arena.
