ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Quincy used a dominant performance on the mound and a four-run sixth inning to take down Maryville 5-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Weber Field. The Hawks improved to 23-14 on the season and have now won three straight games.
Neither team could get much going offensively through the first two innings as
Ryan Sell and the Quincy defense kept Maryville off the board early. The Hawks broke through in the top of the third inning when
Jace Figuereo singled, stole second, advanced to third on an error by the catcher, and scored on an outfield error in the same play to give Quincy a 1-0 lead.
Maryville answered immediately in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1, but Sell continued to settle in after that. He worked around a double in the fourth and left the game after four innings, allowing just one run on three hits with three strikeouts, his best outing of the season.
The game remained tied until the sixth inning when Quincy finally broke it open. Figuereo singled to begin the inning and
Ben Dahlof followed with an infield hit. A throwing error on a pickoff attempt allowed Figuereo to score and Dahlof to move all the way to third.
Isaiah Fudge then ripped an RBI double to left center to make it 3-1. After
Joe Huffman drew a walk,
Cole Erickson delivered the big hit of the inning with a two-run double to center field, extending the lead to 5-1.
The Hawks bullpen took over from there and was dominant.
Tyler Lipka earned his second win of the season after tossing two scoreless innings without allowing a hit.
Jayson Shorb worked around three hits in the seventh inning to keep Maryville off the board,
Ethan McMasters tossed his fourth scoreless outing of the season in the eighth, and
Payton Mansfield struck out the side in order on just 10 pitches in the ninth. Mansfield still has not allowed an earned run in four appearances on the mound this season. The Quincy bullpen combined for five scoreless innings, allowing just four hits with four strikeouts and no free passes.
Figuereo recorded his 17th multi-hit game of the season, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Fudge added his 20th multi-hit game of the year, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Harry Fandre extended his hit streak to seven games with a single, while Erickson drove in two runs with his sixth inning double.
The Hawks will look to continue their winning ways as they welcome Southwest Baptist University to town for the final home series of the season. Game one is scheduled for 2:00 PM on Friday April 10th from QU Stadium.
