KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Quincy University men's volleyball team was overpowered by Rockhurst University on Thursday night, falling in straight sets 25-18, 25-20, 25-13 inside Mason-Halpin Field House. The loss drops the Hawks to 8-10 overall and 5-4 in GLVC play.
Rockhurst set the tone early in the opening set, scoring five of the first six points to jump out to a 5-1 lead behind three early kills. Quincy responded and eventually tied the set at 10-10 after a 4-0 run fueled by three Rockhurst errors. The Hawks were unable to sustain the momentum, however, as Rockhurst answered with a 9-1 run to take a commanding 19-11 lead. During that stretch, Quincy committed five errors while Rockhurst added three service aces. The Hawks were unable to recover, and Rockhurst closed the set by scoring three of the final four points to take the opener 25-18.
Quincy opened the second set with kills from
Barnabas Fenyvesi and
Bauer Larson to take an early 2-1 lead, and the two teams traded points throughout much of the frame. The Hawks held a narrow 7-6 advantage early, but Rockhurst slowly created separation late in the set. Leading 16-15, the Hawks closed on a 9-5 run featuring five kills and a key block to take the set 25-20 and move within one set of the match victory. Quincy had its best offensive set of the night in the second, hitting .250 with 11 kills and five errors, but Rockhurst answered with a .357 hitting percentage and 16 kills.
The third set belonged to Rockhurst from the start. The Hawks scored eight of the first 10 points and never looked back. Quincy briefly cut the deficit back to four, but Rockhurst answered with multiple runs to cruise to a 25-13 set victory and complete the sweep. The Hawks struggled offensively in the final frame, hitting -.050 with four kills and five errors while also committing five service errors. Rockhurst hit .381 in the set with 13 kills, adding two service aces and two blocks.
Rockhurst held the advantage in nearly every statistical category, finishing with 39 kills on a .338 hitting percentage compared to Quincy's 22 kills and .079 mark. The Hawks committed 17 attack errors and 12 service errors in the match, while Rockhurst totaled six service aces and seven blocks.
Fenyvesi led Quincy with 10 kills on an impressive .533 hitting percentage, surpassing 400 career points in the process.
Zackary Zdrojeski added four kills and a service ace, while
Tomas Badan finished with three kills, a service ace, and five total blocks.
Pawel Tuz dished out 17 assists and led the team with five digs.
For Rockhurst, Aron DeRoy was nearly unstoppable with 10 kills on .909 hitting, while Quentin Huhman added nine kills and Wesley Yusk chipped in seven kills and five total blocks.
Quincy will look for revenge against Rockhurst tomorrow at 6:00 PM inside Mason-Halpin Field House.
