Hawks Pushed to the Brink in Third Set, Swept by Rockhurst Again

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Quincy University men's volleyball team was swept by Rockhurst University for the second straight day on Friday afternoon, falling 25-19, 25-21, 30-28 inside Mason-Halpin Field House. The loss drops the Hawks to 8-11 overall and 5-5 in GLVC play.

Quincy came out strong in the opening set, scoring eight of the first 12 points behind five early kills, including two each from Zackary Zdrojeski and Tomas Badan. Rockhurst quickly answered with an 8-1 run to take a 12-9 lead after putting down five kills during the stretch. With Quincy trailing just 13-11, the Hawks saw the set slip away as Rockhurst rattled off six straight points to build a 19-11 advantage, capitalizing on four Quincy errors. The Hawks were unable to recover, and a Badan service error ended the set at 25-19. Quincy hit just .036 in the opener with eight kills and seven errors, while Rockhurst hit .345 with 14 kills and four errors.

Rockhurst again grabbed control early in the second set, jumping out to a 7-3 lead. The Hawks continued to battle and remained within striking distance for much of the frame, but Rockhurst slowly built its lead with a series of small runs, eventually pushing the margin to 20-12. Quincy made one final push, scoring six straight points behind a pair of big blocks to cut the deficit to two. Rockhurst weathered the run, however, answering with three straight points before closing out the set 25-21 with a kill. For the second straight set, Rockhurst hit .345, recording 13 kills and three errors, while Quincy hit .182 with 10 kills and six errors.

The third set was the most competitive of the match, with neither team leading by more than three points for much of the frame. Quincy trailed 19-18 before scoring three straight points to take the lead behind three consecutive Rockhurst errors. The Hawks eventually reached set point at 24-21 and looked poised to force a fourth set, but Rockhurst responded with three straight points to tie the score at 24-24. The two sides continued to trade blows, with Quincy holding another set point at 28-27, but Rockhurst again came through in the clutch, scoring the final three points of the match to complete the sweep with a 30-28 victory. Quincy hit .162 with 14 kills and eight errors in the final set, while Rockhurst posted 19 kills and hit .273.

Rockhurst held the overall advantage offensively, hitting .314 as a team compared to Quincy's .126 mark. The Hawks totaled 32 kills, four service aces, and six total blocks, while Rockhurst finished with 46 kills, four aces, and five total blocks. Quincy also committed 21 attack errors compared to just 14 for Rockhurst.

Zdrojeski led Quincy with nine kills and added a service ace and seven digs. Pawel Tuz finished with 26 assists and eight digs, while Jade Breckheimer led the team with 10 digs. Malachi Allen contributed four kills and three block assists, and Travis Mendoza recorded a career-high four blocks. For Rockhurst, Shay Spadaro and Lucas Tran each recorded 13 kills, while Quentin Huhman added nine kills on .429 hitting.

Quincy will be back in action inside Pepsi Arena on Friday, April 10th as they welcome the Miners of Missouri S&T into town with first serve scheduled for 6:00 PM.
