QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's lacrosse team delivered a thrilling comeback Saturday afternoon, defeating William Jewell 14-13 in overtime at QU Stadium.
Cooper Karedes netted the game-winning goal with just 40 seconds remaining in overtime, capping off a dramatic rally that saw the Hawks score twice in the final seconds of regulation before sealing the victory in the extra period.
The Hawks opened the scoring midway through the first quarter when
Mason Luoma finished a feed from
Jameson Essen to give Quincy the early lead. Luoma struck again just two minutes later, off an assist from
Eli Cowan, pushing the advantage to 2-0.
William Jewell responded with a goal from Nathaniel Leroux before
Trevor Usher restored the two-goal margin for Quincy, finishing a pass from
Haakon Steen. The Cardinals added a late tally to close the quarter, but the Hawks still held a 3-2 lead after the opening period.
William Jewell seized momentum in the second quarter, scoring three straight goals to take a 5-3 lead. Quincy responded midway through the frame as
Seve Cordero capitalized on an extra-man opportunity with a goal assisted by Karedes. However, the Cardinals added another goal in the final minute to carry a 6-4 advantage into halftime.
William Jewell continued its run early in the third quarter, scoring twice to stretch the lead to 8-4. The Hawks began to chip away as Steen finished a pass from
Sean Usher to spark a rally.
Luoma added his third goal of the afternoon off a Cowan assist, and Karedes found the back of the net later in the quarter following a setup from Steen. Cordero added another goal for Quincy, but the Cardinals closed the quarter with a pair of goals to take an 11-8 lead into the final frame.
The Hawks mounted their comeback in the fourth quarter, beginning with an unassisted goal from Steen to cut the deficit to two. Cowan followed moments later, finishing a feed from
Sean Usher to bring Quincy within one.
Cordero then tied the game 11-11 on a man-up goal assisted by Karedes. William Jewell responded with two late goals within a minute of each other to reclaim a 13-11 lead with under two minutes remaining.
Quincy refused to go away. With the Hawks pressing late, Cordero scored again on another extra-man opportunity with 25 seconds left, assisted by Cowan. Just 20 seconds later, out of a QU timeout, Cowan delivered the equalizer with only five seconds remaining in regulation, sending the game to overtime tied 13-13.
In overtime, both teams traded possessions before Quincy gained control with under a minute remaining. Cowan found Karedes, and the freshman buried the shot with 40 seconds left in the extra period, giving the Hawks the dramatic 14-13 victory.
Quincy controlled several key statistical categories in the win, outshooting William Jewell 59-36, including a 32-20 advantage in shots on goal. The Hawks also held edges in ground balls (36-33) and faceoffs (16-14) while successfully clearing 25-of-28 attempts. Quincy capitalized on special teams as well, converting 3-of-7 extra-man opportunities, while limiting the Cardinals to just 1-of-1 on their man-up chance. Defensively, the Hawks forced 26 William Jewell turnovers while committing 19 of their own, helping fuel the late comeback and eventual overtime victory.
Cowan led the Hawks with a career-high six points, scoring two goals and adding a career-best four assists. Cordero paced Quincy in goals with four, while Luoma recorded three goals. Steen added two goals and two assists, and Karedes finished with two goals and two assists, including the overtime game-winner and his first career multi-goal game and a season-high four points.
At the faceoff X,
Jackson Ries won a season-high nine faceoffs, while
Ricci Ankton added a career-high seven faceoff wins and six ground balls. Defensively,
Jonah Pappas caused six turnovers while
Austin Vetter made seven saves in goal to earn the win.
The Hawks return to action on Monday, March 9, at 12:00 PM for a neutral-site matchup against Lynn University, which will be played at Lewis Stadium in Romeoville, Illinois.
