Quincy Takes First Three From Truman, Sweeps Doubleheader to Extend Streak to Six

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team extended its winning streak to six straight games on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader from Truman State at QU Stadium to take the first three games of the series. The Hawks claimed a 2-0 pitchers' duel in game one before erupting offensively in game two with a 12-1 victory, putting Quincy in position to go for its third series sweep of the season.

Game 2: Quincy 2, Truman State 0

Game one was defined by dominant pitching as freshman Rocco Conrad delivered another outstanding performance on the mound. The right-hander tossed a seven-inning complete-game shutout, allowing just five hits while striking out 10, earning his second straight complete game, his first career complete-game shutout, and improving to 3-0 on the season.

The game remained scoreless through the first four innings as Conrad and Truman starter Caden Carroll matched each other pitch-for-pitch. The Hawks finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning when Harry Fandre sparked the rally with a double before Quinn Schultz reached on an error. Freshman Keegan Farnaus then delivered the big hit, recording his first career hit and RBI with a single that plated Fandre to give Quincy a 1-0 lead. Moments later, with runners on first and third, Schultz broke for home after the Bulldogs attempted to throw out the runner stealing second, swiping the plate and extending the Hawks' lead to 2-0.

Truman threatened in the sixth inning, loading the bases with one out, but Conrad worked out of the jam and closed the door in the seventh to secure the shutout victory. Isaiah Fudge also extended his hitting streak to 11 games in the win with a double as the Hawks totaled four hits, tying their season low.

Game 3: Quincy 12, Truman State 1

Quincy carried that momentum into game two and jumped on the scoreboard immediately. Fudge continued his strong weekend with a solo home run in the first inning, his second of the season, extending his hitting streak to 12 games while moving him to a team-high 23 RBIs on the year.

The Hawks added another run in the third before freshman Ari Fivelson launched a solo home run in the fourth inning, his team-leading fifth homer of the season, giving Quincy a 3-0 lead and pushing his RBI total to 20 on the year.

Truman briefly cut into the lead with a solo home run in the fifth, but Quincy quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning. Cole Erickson crushed a two-run home run to deep center field to extend the advantage to 5-1, and just two pitches later, David Broughton followed with a solo shot of his own, his fourth home run of the season, giving the Hawks back-to-back homers and pushing the lead to 6-1.

The Hawks put the game away with a six-run sixth inning. Payton Mansfield drove in two runs with a single, Fandre followed with an RBI triple, and Broughton added another RBI single. Farnaus capped the rally with a two-run single, securing his first career multi-hit game as Quincy stretched the lead to 12-1.

On the mound, Kade Ruffner delivered a strong outing, allowing just one run over six innings while striking out nine to improve to 3-1 on the season. Ethan McMasters worked a scoreless seventh inning in relief to close out the win, his second straight scoreless outing.

Quincy finished the doubleheader with 14 runs on 16 hits, including four home runs in game two, while the pitching staff limited Truman State to just one run across the two games.

With the victories, the Hawks have now won six straight games and claimed the first three games of the series against Truman State. Quincy will look to complete the sweep — its third of the season — when the teams meet for game four on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 PM from QU Stadium.
