Hawks Walk Off Panthers Twice, Secure Series Win Over Davenport

QUINCY, Ill. - Quincy University delivered a dramatic Saturday at QU Stadium, earning back-to-back walk-off victories to take three of four games from Davenport. After a 4-3 walk-off win in the opener of the second doubleheader, the Hawks erased a five-run deficit and walked it off again in extra innings to claim a 9-8 victory in the finale.

Game 3 - Quincy 4, Davenport 3

Quincy starter Kade Ruffner set the tone early, navigating traffic in the first inning before settling into a rhythm. Davenport threatened with a runner reaching third in the opening frame, but Ruffner induced a strikeout to escape the jam and keep the game scoreless.

Both offenses were quiet through the first three innings as Ruffner and Davenport starter Colton Blankstrom matched zeros. The Hawks put a runner at third base in the third after Patrick Mendiola singled and advanced on an error, but the Panthers escaped to maintain the deadlock.

The Hawks broke through in the fourth inning. Joe Huffman opened the frame with a single before Isaiah Fudge delivered the game's first run with a triple into right-center. Fudge later scored on a passed ball to extend the lead to 2-0.

Davenport answered in the fifth. After a walk and a stolen base put pressure on the defense, Julian Contreras singled through the right side to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Quincy responded immediately in the bottom half. Jace Figuereo singled and advanced on Huffman's hit before Payton Mansfield delivered an RBI single to right, restoring a two-run advantage at 3-1.

Ruffner continued to cruise into the seventh, but the Panthers mounted one final push. A walk set the stage for Travis Liford, who launched a two-run homer down the left-field line on the first pitch he saw to tie the game at 3-3. Davenport loaded the bases later in the inning, but Mansfield entered in relief and recorded a clutch strikeout on three straight pitches to preserve the tie.

In the bottom of the seventh, Quincy quickly seized the moment. Mendiola opened with a double to left and was replaced by pinch runner Jack Haggard. After a strikeout, Ben Dahlof drew a walk to put the winning run in scoring position. Figuereo then delivered the decisive blow, singling to left to score Haggard and secure the walk-off victory.

Mansfield earned the win in relief, marking his first collegiate victory in just his third career pitching appearance, as the freshman right-hander delivered under pressure in the decisive moment.

Figuereo paced the offense, going 2-for-4 with an RBI, including the walk-off hit. Huffman and Fudge each added two hits, with Fudge driving in a run and scoring once while also recording a triple. Mansfield contributed an RBI single at the plate and secured the victory on the mound. Mendiola added two hits, including the leadoff double in the seventh that sparked the winning rally.

Ruffner delivered 6.2 strong innings, allowing three runs while striking out five before turning the game over to Mansfield, who recorded the final out to seal the win.

Quincy finished with nine hits and committed no errors, while Davenport recorded seven hits and one error. The Hawks capitalized on timely hitting and situational execution, stranding only three runners compared to seven left on base by the Panthers.

Game 4 - Quincy 9, Davenport 8 (10 innings)

Quincy wasted no time jumping in front in the first inning. Dahlof was hit by a pitch and quickly moved into scoring position before Figuereo singled him home. After a stolen base sequence created further pressure, Mansfield delivered an RBI single, and a passed ball allowed another run to score as the Hawks built an early 3-0 advantage.

Davenport responded with a solo homer in the second before a two-run homer in the third tied the game at 3-3. The Panthers added two runs in the fifth to take a 5-3 advantage.

After Quincy threatened but could not break through in the middle innings, Davenport extended its lead to 8-3 in the seventh using walks, hit batters, and timely hits to load the bases and push across three runs.

The Hawks answered immediately with a pivotal rally in the bottom half. Hit batters and walks loaded the bases before Huffman was hit by a pitch to force in a run. A wild pitch scored another, and Fudge grounded out to bring home a third run, trimming the deficit to 8-6.

Quincy continued its comeback in the eighth. Harry Fandre drew a walk and moved into scoring position before Dahlof delivered an RBI double to make it 8-7.

Down to their final outs in the ninth, the Hawks found another clutch moment. Fudge was hit by a pitch and later scored when Fandre lined a two-out single that deflected off the shortstop's glove and into right field, tying the game at 8-8 and forcing extras.

Reliever Matt Miscik dominated on the mound, holding Davenport scoreless across the final four innings while striking out seven to keep Quincy within reach.

In the bottom of the 10th, Figuereo singled and advanced to third following a steal and a throwing error. After intentional walks loaded the bases, Fudge delivered the decisive blow with a single that passed the shallow infield, scoring Figuereo and completing the walk-off victory.

Miscik earned his first win in a QU uniform with four shutout innings of relief, allowing no hits while striking out seven in a dominant outing.

Figuereo finished with three runs scored and two hits while igniting the offense throughout the game. Dahlof reached base four times, scored twice, drove in a run, and stole two bases. Fudge delivered two RBIs, including the walk-off winner. Mansfield added an RBI and reached base three times, while Fandre drove in the game-tying run in the ninth and later scored in the eighth rally.

The Hawks will be back in action for their first GLVC series of the season as Truman State comes to town, with the first pitch of Game 1 scheduled for 2:00 PM from QU Stadium on Friday, March 6.
