Late Basket Lifts Drury Past Hawks, 87-85

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Hawks dropped another heartbreaker on Thursday night inside the O'Reilly Family Event Center, falling 87-85 to Drury. The Panthers' efficiency proved to be the difference, as they shot 54.4 percent from the field and went 16-of-17 from the free-throw line.

Both teams came out firing, with Quincy building a 17-10 lead on 7-of-9 shooting behind nine early points from Tiernan Stynes. Drury answered with an efficient offense of its own, tying the game at 24 with 10:49 remaining after five different Panthers scored.

The Panthers followed with an 8-0 run on perfect shooting over a two-minute span to take a 32-24 advantage. Over the final eight minutes, Drury continued to score efficiently, while Quincy stayed within striking distance by getting to the line. Drury carried a 45-35 lead into the break.

The scoring pace only picked up after halftime. Quincy opened the half shooting 8-of-9 from the field and 3-of-3 from deep, led by 11 points from Camren Kincaid in the first seven minutes. Drury kept pace with four three-pointers of its own, but the Hawks cut the deficit to 63-57.

Quincy then used a 10-4 run to erase the deficit, capped by a Stynes three that tied the game at 67 with just under eight minutes remaining.

The final stretch saw both teams trade punches, with Drury holding a narrow 81-79 edge with just over two minutes to play. The final 10 points before the last possession all came at the free-throw line, as Ethan Bolton tied the game at 85 with 28 seconds remaining.

Drury answered on the ensuing possession, as Colin Hardrick drove through traffic for a go-ahead layup with 5.6 seconds left. Out of a timeout, Kincaid pushed the ball up the floor and took a three at the buzzer, but it came up short as the Panthers secured the 87-85 win.

Drury shot 54.4 percent from the field, 45.0 percent from three, and 94.1 percent at the line. Quincy shot 43.1 percent overall and stayed in the game with 27 made free throws. The Hawks won the rebounding battle 34-27, but Drury held a 40-28 advantage in points in the paint, with efficiency ultimately deciding the contest.

Stynes led the Hawks with 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting, finishing one point shy of his career high. Bolton recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Kincaid added 18 points, while Ethyn Brown chipped in 12 off the bench.

For Drury, it was the big three of KeShaun Thomas, Zach Howell, and Hardrick combining for 54 points, all shooting better than 50 percent. Luke Stubbs added a season-high 17 points as the Panthers placed four players in double figures.

The Hawks will look to snap their skid on Saturday in Rolla, Missouri, as they take on No. 24 Missouri S&T inside Gibson Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 PM, following the women's game.
