Hawks Explode for 42 Runs to Sweep Roosevelt in Doubleheader

QUINCY, Ill. – Quincy University's offense erupted for 42 runs on 39 hits Friday afternoon as the Hawks swept Roosevelt in a doubleheader at QU Stadium. Quincy powered past the Lakers 27-4 in the opener before finishing the sweep with a 15-5 run-rule victory in seven innings in the scheduled nine-inning nightcap, improving to 6-4 on the season.

Game 1: Quincy 27, Roosevelt 4

The Hawks wasted no time setting the tone, scoring in every inning and piling up 25 hits in the opener.

After Jace Figuereo walked and stole second before swiping third, Joe Huffman walked and moved into scoring position. An error allowed the first run to score before David Broughton ripped a two-run double to give Quincy a 3-0 lead in the opening frame.

The Hawks broke the game open in the second inning. Ben Dahlof was hit by a pitch and later scored, Huffman added an RBI single, and Isaiah Fudge singled in another run. Broughton then launched a three-run home run to right, and Quinn Schultz followed with a solo shot as Quincy surged ahead 10-0 after a seven-spot in the second inning.

Roosevelt answered with three runs in the third, but Quincy responded immediately. Huffman lifted a sacrifice fly to score Dahlof, Fudge delivered an RBI single, Harry Fandre drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and RBI singles from Patrick Mendiola and Ari Fivelson pushed the lead to 15-3.

The Hawks added six more runs in the fourth inning. Fudge drove in two with a single, and Broughton added another RBI knock for his sixth RBI of the game. Schultz continued to swing a hot bat with a two-run triple, and Mendiola lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 21-3.

Fandre added an RBI single in the fifth before Quincy plated five more runs in the sixth, highlighted by Fandre's three-run triple down the right-field line to complete the 27-4 scoring.

RomanHarrison earned the win, striking out nine over five innings while allowing two earned runs. Quincy native Brady Lowe made his collegiate debut in relief, allowing one run while striking out three over the final two innings.

Quincy's offense was dominant throughout the opener. Fudge finished 5-for-6 with five RBIs and five runs scored, while Broughton drove in six runs and homered. Figuereo crossed the plate five times and stole three bases, Schultz added a home run and triple with three RBIs, and Fandre recorded five RBIs, including a bases-clearing triple. Mendiola and Fivelson each collected three hits as the Hawks totaled 25 RBI and seven extra-base hits.

Game 2: Quincy 15, Roosevelt 5 (7 innings)

In the nightcap, Roosevelt struck first with a run in the opening inning before Quincy left a runner in scoring position.

The Hawks broke through in the third. Huffman singled, and Byron Blaise followed with a base hit ahead of a three-run home run from Fudge. Carson Moreno later walked, Broughton doubled home a run, and Fivelson added an RBI single to give Quincy a 5-1 lead.

Roosevelt answered with four runs in the fourth to tie the game, but Quincy responded immediately. Moreno lifted a sacrifice fly to restore the lead before Broughton delivered an RBI single, marking his 100th career RBI. Moments later, Cole Erickson crushed a three-run home run to push the Hawks ahead 10-5.

The Hawks sealed the run-rule victory with a five-run sixth inning. Broughton singled to start the frame, and Erickson was hit by a pitch before Fivelson launched a three-run homer to right-center. Dahlof later scored on an error after a Huffman single, and Fudge added a sacrifice fly to cap the scoring at 15-5.

Freshman Rocco Conrad earned his first collegiate victory in his first career start, striking out five over four innings. Logan Mueller closed the door with three scoreless innings in relief, striking out four.

Broughton led the offense with three hits, including a double and two RBI, highlighted by his milestone RBI. Fudge powered the Hawks with a three-run homer and four RBI, while Fivelson homered and drove in four runs. Erickson added a three-run home run, Blaise collected three hits and scored twice, and Huffman reached base three times, scored three runs, and stole two bases as Quincy finished with 14 hits and three home runs.

The Hawks will return to action tomorrow at QU Stadium, hosting Roosevelt for another doubleheader beginning at noon.
