GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Quincy University baseball showed resilience and offensive firepower Saturday but came up short in both games of a doubleheader against No. 12 Colorado Mesa, falling 8–6 in game one before dropping the finale 6–2 at The Diamond.
Game One: Colorado Mesa 8, Quincy 6
The Hawks jumped on the nationally ranked Mavericks early, plating four runs in the first two innings.
Joe Huffman delivered an RBI single in the opening frame, and
Carson Moreno launched a solo home run in the second before Huffman added another RBI knock to give Quincy a 4–0 lead.
Colorado Mesa answered with two runs in the second, but Moreno struck again in the third with his second home run of the afternoon to extend the Hawks' lead to 5–2.
The Mavericks responded with a decisive four-run third inning to take their first lead and added two more in the fifth on bases-loaded walks to push the advantage to 8–5.
Quincy trimmed the deficit in the seventh when Huffman drove in his third run of the game, but the Hawks were unable to complete the comeback.
Moreno powered the offense, finishing 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double, and two RBIs. Huffman added two hits and three RBIs, while
Cole Erickson recorded two hits and
Ben Dahlof scored twice.
Game Two: Colorado Mesa 6, Quincy 2
The Hawks again struck first in the nightcap as Moreno continued his big day at the plate with a solo home run in the second inning.
After Colorado Mesa tied the game in the third, Quincy regained the lead in the fifth.
Byron Blaise doubled to spark the rally, and
Jack Haggard's bunt single set the table before a ground ball brought home the go-ahead run to make it 2–1.
The Mavericks broke through in the sixth inning, using timely hits and a Quincy error to score five runs and take control. An RBI single from Rocco DiFrancesco tied the game before Ezra Farmer delivered a two-run single to cap the rally.
Moreno finished the doubleheader with another home run and led Quincy offensively, while Blaise added a double and a run scored.
Ben Draeger provided a strong start in game two, allowing just one run over three innings.
Quincy moves to 4-3 on the season and will look to salvage the series against the Mavericks tomorrow at 1:00 PM.
