LEMONT, Ill. – The Quincy University men's golf team turned in its best team finish of the season at the Flyers Fall Intercollegiate, placing second out of 15 teams at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club.
Competing on the par-72, 7,078-yard Dubsdread Course against an 88-player field, the Hawks posted rounds of 294 (+6), 302 (+14) and 294 (+6) to finish with a three-round total of 890 (+26). Quincy finished 15 strokes behind tournament champion Missouri-St. Louis, which claimed the team title at +11.
Colby Robertson led the Hawks for the second consecutive tournament, finishing tied for second overall with a three-round total of 218 (+2). Robertson opened with an even-par 72, recording five birdies during the round. He followed with a 74 (+2) in round two before returning to even par with another 72 in the final round. Robertson carded four birdies in each of his final two rounds to finish the tournament with 13 birdies across 54 holes. He finished just four strokes behind the individual champion, who won the tournament at two-under par.
David Gartrell continued his strong start to the season, finishing fifth overall with a total of 220 (+4). Gartrell opened the tournament with an even-par 72, using birdies on the par-5 fifth and par-3 14th to offset two bogeys. He followed with another even-par 72 in round two behind three birdies before closing with a 76 (+4). Gartrell recorded eight birdies over the three rounds.
Blake Arnold delivered one of Quincy's biggest performances of the tournament, finishing tied for 12th at 226 (+10). Arnold opened with a 75 (+3), highlighted by three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 11th hole. After an 82 (+10) in round two, Arnold responded in a big way during the final round, firing a team-best 69 (-3).
Arnold's closing round featured four birdies and just one bogey. He made the turn at one-under after birdies on holes one and six before adding two more on the back nine at the par-4 13th and par-5 15th to finish the day three-under.
Logan Smith placed tied for 23rd with a three-round score of 229 (+13). Smith opened with a 75 (+3) before posting consecutive rounds of 77 (+5). His opening round featured three birdies, and he added three more in round two and two in the final round to finish with eight for the tournament.
Hunter St. Clair rounded out the Quincy lineup, finishing tied for 67th at 243 (+27) after rounds of 80, 79 and 84. St. Clair improved by one stroke in the second round while recording birdies on the first and 15th holes. His tournament was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole during the final round.
Quincy's runner-up finish marked its best team placement of the season after previously finishing tied for fourth at the Arch Cup and 10th at the Midwest Collegiate.
The Hawks will return home for their next competition, hosting the Wildcat Fall Classic on Oct. 10-11 at Spring Lake Country Club in Quincy, Illinois.
